On Saturday, March 14, 2026, Investigators from the Central Texas Interdiction Unit, including Kerr County and Kendall County Sheriff’s deputies, stopped a vehicle headed West on Interstate 10. After speaking to the driver, a Mexican national from Chihuahua, Investigators discovered clear inconsistencies in her story and travel itinerary. Investigators requested and were granted consent to search the vehicle. During the search, Investigators located four Barrett .50 caliber rifles. Two had serial numbers removed.
The driver, Sunshine Puentes-Rivas, 45, of Mexico, was arrested on one count of Alien in Possession of a Firearm. Additional federal firearms charges are pending.
As in all criminal cases, charges may be added or modified prior to trial, and all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
“This case is another example of how collaboration makes a big difference in public safety,” said Sheriff Larry Leitha. “Intercepting this attempt to move firearms beyond US borders is a major win for safety on both sides of the border. Five years ago, our Office began a clear focus on working with outside jurisdictions. We remain proud to organize and participate in cooperative law enforcement throughout our region. We’re also proud of the consistent results.
