accident Rock climbing is for fags

June 28th, Brazil

A man died on Sunday morning (the 28th) after falling during a hike at Pedra do Macaco, in São José de Imbassaí, a district of Maricá. Caio Arrabal, 44, lost his balance on a rock formation and fell into an area of dense forest. According to reports, the fall occurred while he was attempting to take a photograph.
The accident was captured on camera by a friend who was accompanying Caio on the hike. The Fire Department was called at around 11:30 a.m. and conducted a difficult rescue operation involving teams from Maricá and Niterói, as well as support from a helicopter. The body was located in the mid-afternoon. The 82nd Police Precinct (Maricá) is investigating the circumstances of the fall.

Pedra do Macaco is one of the most popular spots for hikers, rappellers, and climbers in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro. The route to the viewpoint is about 700 meters long and typically takes 40 minutes to an hour to complete. Despite the relatively short distance, the trail features a steep incline with an elevation gain of approximately 220 meters, requiring physical fitness from visitors.

The most precarious section is the final approach to the summit. According to experts, reaching the top requires traversing large stone slabs bordered by cliffs, with no safety barriers or signage, making it recommended only for those experienced in mountaineering and climbing.

It is precisely in this area that many visitors stop to take photos of the landscape. From the summit, at an altitude of approximately 240 meters, one can view Pedra de Inoã, the Maricá lagoons, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding Atlantic Forest.

Experts recommend that inexperienced visitors do not venture beyond the main viewpoint, particularly on rainy days or when the rocks are wet, due to the high risk of slips and falls.

The death of Caio Arrabal is the second fatal accident recorded on Maricá trails in less than 15 days. On the 14th of this month, nurse Rosemary da Silva Garcia, 59, died after slipping on a trail leading to the Spar Caves (Grutas do Spar) in the Inoã region, where she was scheduled to participate in a rappelling activity.

According to witnesses, Rosemary was with a group of hikers and climbers when she stopped near a steep drop-off to apply insect repellent. As she lifted one of her legs, she lost her footing, slipped on a rocky section, and fell off the cliff.

She was wearing safety gear, including a helmet and gloves, but had not yet begun rappelling at the time of the accident.
