Alaska police are investigating after family members cleaning out the home of a deceased relative discovered what appeared to be human remains inside a chest freezer.

The Juneau Police Department said officers responded Sunday evening to the home after relatives reported finding the remains in a locked outbuilding on the property.

Investigators confirmed the remains were inside a chest freezer.


Police said a preliminary identification suggests the remains may belong to an adult male family member. However, the identity has not been officially confirmed pending an autopsy by the Alaska State Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities said they do not know how long the remains had been stored in the freezer. Investigators also found no record that the Juneau Police Department had ever received a missing person's report related to the deceased.

The medical examiner will determine the person's identity, as well as the cause and manner of death.

Police said there is no known threat to the public, and the investigation remains ongoing.
