First Front Row Start For New Ninja ZX-10R At Second Round

WSBK, Donington Park, United Kingdom, 26 March 2011
Tom Sykes gave the all-new Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R its first front row start in WSBK racing at Tom’s home round of Donington, after setting the third best lap time in Superpole three.

Sykes was particularly pleased to have gone so quickly when using a race tyre in Superpole, as he had used up his two allotted qualifying tyres in the first two Superpole sessions. He had no choice but to select a race compound as he went for a front row slot and built his speed up to take a 1’28.556 for the Kawasaki Racing Team Superbike squad - and give the home fans something to cheer about on the eve of raceday.

Joan Lascorz was also in the mix in Superpole, but could not use his second qualifying tyre to the best effect and he went 12th fastest overall. He starts Sunday’s two WSBK races from the third row, and hopes to take his first points scores at the recently modified English circuit.

Returnee rider Chris Vermeulen rode for over 30 laps in the first practice and qualifying sessions yesterday and gained many positive insights into his Ninja ZX-10R race machine. Pain from his knee injury, however, meant that he did not ride again today. It was decided he should not race tomorrow but the experience of Friday has filled Chris and the team with the confidence that he can undertake a full weekend of practice and race action at the next round, Assen.

Tom Sykes: “I was a little surprised because for the last session we only had a race tyre to use and it took me until lap four to put in a decent time. Going into Superpole three with no qualifying tyre I was not confident we could get a front row start, but I dug deep when I saw I had one minute remaining. I wanted my last fast lap to count, and it did. A front row start should make tomorrow a little easier. It is all pretty much one line around here in the first laps, from Redgate until the back straight. A front row start is good for us all in the team and a nice landmark for the new bike in only its second race weekend.”

Joan Lascorz: “I improved on my best lap time when I put on the first qualifier and that is what we are aiming for. We used the second qualifier and I was not able to do the same lap time and that is why I could not go into the next Superpole session. I need a bit more understanding of the bike but I am happy, and Tom is showing that the new bike is working pretty well.”

Chris Vermeulen: “It was great to get the chance to ride here and we made the most of it on the first day. My knee is just too sore to ride any more this weekend but I hope to get some more track time in on my Ninja ZX-10R before the Assen round and do a complete weekend there. The new bike feels good and I have been able to start making changes to the handlebar position and so on, so the track time at Donington has been very useful.”

Front Row Placing For Parkes

WSS, Donington Park, United Kingdom, 26 March 2011
Two days of contrasting track temperatures helped place Broc Parkes fourth and David Salom fifth in combined qualifying for the second round of the year, meaning Parkes will start from the first row.

The relatively warm and sunny first day was replaced by a cold and overcast second day of action. Both Kawasaki riders took a tumble at turn three this morning, on the first left-hander after a series of rights, but recovered to post good qualifying times and strong race pace.

No less than 28 riders qualified for the 22-lap race, to be held at 13.30 hours on Sunday, with Massimo Roccoli (Lorenzini by Leoni Kawasaki) going into the top ten after combined qualifying. His team-mate Vittorio Iannuzzo was 14th today.

Broc Parkes: “It all ended up pretty good in the afternoon session. I had a crash on the fast left down Craner Curves, on a cold tyre this morning, and it is a lot faster down there than I thought! I hurt myself a little; my right thumb and a couple of ribs are quite sore. I was a bit worried about how it would be in qualifying this afternoon but I was fine. The weather was a bit cooler today and it was hard to make the lap times simply because of that. But we worked it out and I was fourth on the grid and second in the session. Our consistency of lap time is pretty good as well. Our race pace should be right there and we may try a couple of new things tomorrow, but just little touches here or there.”

David Salom: “I will have a reasonable starting position tomorrow so that is the most important thing. I had a small problem with the bike in final qualifying session, just some chatter when I opened the throttle but I think it is maybe because I had a crash this morning. The guys are checking now but no problem; we will be fine for tomorrow. I will start near the front and our race pace is good for the weather conditions we expect to find in the races.”

Hopkins ready for Rizla Suzuki return

Monday, 28 March 2011
John Hopkins will be rolling back the years as he makes a return to the Rizla Suzuki team at this weekend’s Gran Premio bwin de España in Jerez.

John Hopkins will make a return to MotoGP racing this weekend at the Gran Premio bwin de España, where he will be reunited with the Rizla Suzuki team for whom he finished fourth in the 2007 MotoGP World Championship.
The American rides as a replacement for the injured Álvaro Bautista on the team, having now fully recovered himself from a wrist injury that threatened his career last season. Hopkins is currently in the middle of pre-season testing for British Superbikes with the Samsung Crescent Racing team, and will start his Jerez experience with the opening practice session on Friday morning.
“I was shocked by what happened to Álvaro, especially after such good winter testing, and I really wish him a speedy and full recovery - I wanted the opportunity to get back on a MotoGP bike, but not under these circumstances,” explained Hopkins, who rode the GSV-R during the Qatar Test, but only for some commercial filming.
“I’m under no illusions that this will be tough weekend for me, as I’ve not been on a GP machine for a couple of years or ridden the new control tyres – except for the filming I did in Qatar a couple of weeks ago – so I realise this will be a step up from what I have been riding recently. The bikes have moved on in the last three years, but when I rode the GSV-R at Losail it seemed so familiar and I immediately had a good feeling, but that was at filming pace, so it’s going to be a lot different at race pace!”
Hopkins continued: “I know the Jerez track well, so it’s not like I need to learn a new circuit and I also know the team well so that that will help a lot. I will certainly be trying as hard as I can to get a good result and make sure that I don’t disappoint anybody – myself included. I want to say a big thank you to Suzuki and Rizla for giving me this opportunity and I intend to pay back their faith with a good performance on my return to MotoGP.”
The Rizla Suzuki team also hopes to welcome Bautista to Jerez, where he is planning to visit as a spectator as his recovery process continues to go well.

Pedrosa sets FP2 pace but Stoner remains fastest overall

Friday, 1 April 2011
It was the familiar Repsol Honda duo leading the way in the second free practice but this time it was the Spanish rider Dani Pedrosa who got the better of his team-mate Casey Stoner for this weekend’s Gran Premio bwin de España.

Jerez 2011 - MotoGP - FP2 - Highlights
Pedrosa’s lap time of 1’40:101 in FP2 was 0.188 faster than the Australian. The Spanish rider is a previous winner here in Jerez and on home soil he will be wanting to build on his third place after Qatar, after being compromised by a shoulder injury. Team-mate Stoner is the first Honda rider to be leading the MotoGP championship standings since Pedrosa, after the Dutch TT in 2008. This session was the first time the ex-Ducati rider will not top the timesheets since the season has begun.
In glorious conditions for free practice 2 for MotoGP, with temperatures of around 31 degrees and a strong breeze, the top seven riders failed to improve on their times set in the morning practice. Pedrosa’s time was nearly six tenths slower than Stoner’s best lap from FP1.
Reigning MotoGP World Champion, Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing) was the best of the rest, moving up from fifth from the morning session to third. Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) repeated his form from FP1, with the fourth fastest lap, 0.600 off the time from the Repsol Honda rider. Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) was the fastest Ducati, registering a time 0.946 behind Pedrosa.
The next Ducati was that of Randy de Puniet (Pramac Racing) in sixth place who finished ahead of Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team), who was further back in eighth. Ben Spies (Yamaha Factory Racing) making only his second visit to the Jerez circuit after his debut here in 2010, was seventh fastest splitting the two Ducati bikes. Ninth quickest was Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini) who had been 13th in the first practice and is a previous victor in Jerez after a race win in the 250cc race in 2009, his only podium at the circuit.
Rookie Karel Abraham (Cardion ab Motoracing) who scored 3 points his debut MotoGP race in Losail, had a few incidents in FP2, firstly when he had a minor excursion into the gravel but regained control, then later on sliding off at turn 6. He managed to finish in tenth place, 1.203 behind Pedrosa, ahead of both Monster Yamaha Tech 3 and Rizla Suzuki riders in just his second outing in the premier class.
