What do you collect?

*BIG NERD ALERT*

I'm a coin dealer professionally and run a shop in my home town. Haha! Small world...

I'll post a few more pics of my military stuff when I get a chance.
Ya, small world. I dont collect professionally but have been collecting coins n stamps since I was about 9 or 10 (my dads been collecting for about 60 yrs and started me on it). Most of my coin collection are coins from the Canada Mint on their limited runs along with what Ive found in my change over the years - silver dimes, quarters, brown tom backs, early US and British coins (mostly silver).

But I unexpectably came upon a motherlode of coins, stamps and other items last year that blew open my collection. A coin n stamp shop about 5 minutes away from me burned down. The collector had been in business about 50-60 years. Before his shop (on the main floor of a 3-story row house) was torn down (after the fire) crews were able to rescue 4 of his 5 large safes. They had to use cranes to life the heavy safes out of the rubble and the last one broke loose and spilled all of its contents all over the area. Along with that, his displays, shelves, albums, boxes, etc. were never recovered.

I happened onto the scene about 2 months after the fire when I saw it and went there to take photos (I didnt know about the building that had burned down) - me and my urban-abandoned places exploring. I ended up finding photos from the 1920s uo the 1950s in the mass of debris and was able to track down the owner who turned out to be owner of the shop and the building. He was 81 at the time and told me that he had recovered what he could and couldnt be bothered with what was still there. He added, if you find anything...its yours.

The photos a few posts back of my coins are part of the hundreds (upwards of a thousand) of coins that I recovered from the site from all countries and some gold, some silver, some proofs, some very rare, some in large quantities (he would collect hundreds of the same coin if he thought it had value) and many run of the mill coins.

As I learned what was lying beneath the massive pile of rubble and began to search and photograph, I found that many druggies were also in there digging out what they could (which theyd take to Cash Converters for their next fix). Along with getting so many coins, I was lucky because Cash Converters wont take stamps - the other people digging there ignored the stamps. I was able to recover stamp album after album - almost 2 years later I still have atleast 1,000 stamps to sort through. Ive already sorted through almost a thousand already.

The old guy didnt want anything back. He was facing lawsuits, fines and financial costs and was happy with what he got. What he didnt expect to ever see again where the family photos albums, which I dug out of the pile of debris, that he had in the shop. He cried when I gave them to him, mumbling names of the people in the photos in his native German, and he bought me a beer.

The knife second from left looks a lot like my Gerber.

I don't have a big fancy schmancy coin collection like our pal DeathHand, but I've got $2.12 in Canadian money, an Australian 2 Cent coin, a British 20 Pence, and a 1985 Fitzgerald's gaming token worth a dollar. With all this I'm gonna buy Detroit!

Nice collection. Why do you have so much foreign money? Have you been to all those countries, or are you murdering tourists? ;)

I like foreign currency because it can be harder to get in Canada and also because the chances are that foreign coins/stamps will be older than Canadian currency. Alot of coin collectors go for "smelt value" (if coins contain gold or silver they are desirable to some because they have them melted down) but I go for the designs, the engravings and the age.

When I was in Tangiers years ago, this girl who was about 7 yrs old, came up and asked if I could spare a peso. She was wearing rags, her face was dirty and she had these big brown eyes. So I pulled out a few pesos and gave them to her. Then I noticed a small group of men and boys appear from different doorways (it was a very narrow street) behind her. Luckily I was at the end of the street where it opened up to a high traffic area.

But some of the countries I have been to and brought back some coins from there (Spain, N. Africa, England, Scotland, etc.). And the bodies will never be found.

Ah, I see, diggin international shallow graves, eh? I was shopping at Walmart the other day and the cashier gave me a Canadian penny mixed with my change, which bumps my Canadian currency collection to $2.13! I don't really collect foreign money, or anything for that matter, I just come into possession of things and sometimes they accumulate. Your story of how you acquire foreign money is a bit more interesting than mine, I think.

Hell, that Canadian penny might be worth something some day - the Canadian gov stopped minting them last year.
