WSBK Laguna Seca, USA: Set-up and style compromises secure Sykes vital win

Tom Sykes says changes to set-up and riding style helped him maximise his opportunity for victory at Laguna Seca to eat into Jonathan Rea's World Superbike championship lead.

After narrowly missing out on victory in race one to Rea, the Kawasaki rider admitted he need a series of set-up changes as well as compromising his riding style to enjoy the required gains which proved enough to secure Sykes his first victory in the US since 2014.

Coupled with Rea's retirement in race two, Sykes has slashed the points deficit in the riders' championship to 46 heading into the summer break.

Despite Rea's DNF Sykes was continuously pressured by Aruba.it Racing Ducati duo of Davide Giugliano and Chaz Davies for victory but was able to fend off his rivals with the help of the overnight adjustments.

“We struggled with edge grip today so I had to change my style a little bit to defend my line,” Sykes said, who admitted he'd been losing time on corner exits in race one. “It destroyed the lap time but gave us the 25 points.

“Overall, it was good race for the spectators and a close one between three riders. I am happy enough but it was a difficult race in some ways. The restart was one more thing to think about and we made some changes, making the best of the situation. We never had the perfect set-up but I feel we made a good compromise.”

Assessing his race weekend overall Sykes moves into the two-month summer pause with some much-needed momentum after halting Rea's three-race winning streak and will look to claw back the 46-point deficit in round 10 at the Lausitzring when the campaign restarts in mid-September.

“We have made a good weekend, with pole position, a second place and a win,” Sykes said. “We will go into the summer break on a high and try to learn from the information we took from the previous Misano round and this one, and then try to put the jigsaw together for the last part of the season.”

Ryder Notes: The New Deal
by julian ryder on the ground in germany
Friday, July 15, 2016

Today was a day for which the phrase 'risk averse' could have been coined. Well, it was after less than ten minutes of the first free practice session when Scott Redding, Jorge Lorenzo and Stefan Bradl hit the ground at the fearsome Turn 11. It was cold, the Tarmac hardly warmest than 10 or 12 degrees C, well outside the temperature range Michelin envisaged when specifying tyres for this race.

It was only a degree or two warmer in the afternoon, which is why the most experienced men around, Rossi, Pedrosa and Lorenzo could be found line-astern in fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth places. That is to take nothing away from Maverick Vinales who was seriously impressive in showing an absence of fear at Turn 11 this afternoon as his bike shimmied all the way down the hill.

More significant than the on-track action was the announcement of IRTA and Dorna's new deal for non-factory teams. From next season, bike-leasing costs are capped at 2.2-million Euro per rider. Factories charging over that amount will have the excess deducted from their own pay cheques and passed on to the team concerned. The teams, Pramac, Tech 3, Marc VDS, Avintia, Aspar, LCR and Gresini, have their grid slots guaranteed until 2021 with LCR offered the chance to again field a second bike. The grid will not be expanded beyond a total of 24.

You've got to hand it to Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta, he gets his way. He used the dreaded CRT years to frighten the factories and this year achieved the ambition of having one type of bike on the grid - no subclasses. Next, one factory team and one satellite team from Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Ducati, Aprilia, and KTM. Job done.

Sykes ZX-10R is a great ride. That bike is pure muscle.

you wont get an argument from me mate i been in love with the green meanies before I could even sit on one let alone buy one. The current zx10 is a killer race and road bike and while it's dominating the series at the moment there is a lot of people who still think the ape is the best bike on the grid. Heres some pics for ya bud.

I'm a huge fan of Casey Stoner. He's aggressive in his riding style. That said I'm not real fond of his bike. Something about Ducati, the electronic issues. They seem to have a little gremlin floating around in the works that can ass things up.
if us bench/couch racers could have fixed it rossi would probably still be on it bud

lots of speculation what the issue is but lets see how Lorenzo goes next year.
