I could not find a back story mentioning the specifics - but some speculations:

The signpost was tilted, got hit by a vehicle, or due to aging crumbling foundations and the bus driver failed to notice;

There was a storm and the sign was blown off a post, or a facade, and then, per one of those insane coincidences, crashed into the bus window.
