There is no consequence to the actions in the states. You do something horrible and get put in a prison where they provide for your every need. If we had street/vigilante justice like a 3rd world country I guarantee there wouldn't be as many crimes. People tend to think a little more before they do dumb shit once they watch someone get a hand chopped off or shot in the street for doing the same.

The freedmen’s bureau fucked up newly freed black slaves by providing everything for them, creating a wholly dependent system that blacks never learned their way out of. Luckily it was vetoed and dissolved by 1870, but the damage was already done.

Should’ve just kept them as slaves, man. Everything was provided for them in that system, and they were content.
