Nah, that was just their excuse for doing it. If I was a despotic king I would want to disarm my people too but I couldn't just do it out of the blue because this would breed too much discontent. I would wait for an event in which I could frame my decision that makes my people think I'm doing it for their own protection. This is how autocratic governments work. This is how they keep power.

Very long example incoming...
The battle of Lexington and Concord in 1775 is a great example of a king trying to disarm his people. Many people may recognize the name Paul Revere but not know what he is famous for. He is famous for warning the people of Massachusetts that the British were coming to take the guns that were stored at the armory located in the town of Concord. This was the first phase of the King George's plan to subdue the 13 Colonies. A force of 1000 British soldiers marched to the town but because Revere spread the word the British were halted by a group of armed militiamen at Lexington (the town just south of Concord). The British waited for the Americans to move but instead one of the Americans, fired a shot, (known as the "Shot Heard Around the World") and the British retaliation was swift and they mowed down the Americans (leaving 8 dead). The Americans scattered (that was the entire "Battle" of Lexington) the British then marched on to Concord to attempt to complete their mission but it was too late. The guns had already been distributed to the American patriots. And the Battle of Concord commenced. It wasn't so much as a battle as a massacre of the British soldiers. They were surrounded on all sides by the Americans armed with the guns from their homes and from the Concord Armory. They killed hundreds of British soldiers with the survivors making their way back to Boston to escape. The Battle of Bunker Hill was then fought as the British made their breakout from Boston which was besieged on all sides. It was a humiliating defeat for the British and proof that guns in the hands of civilians could bring down the most formidable military in the world at that time.

So seeing what the Americans did it's no wonder the British would fear guns in the hands of civilians. Their entire empire was at stake, the power of the King and state power was in jeopardy, so it would make sense for them to ban and confiscate guns from their people least what happened in America happen every else in their empire too.
