Do you have sales tax? We have 12% goods and services tax on top of everything except milk bread and tampons ... That's the bread and butter for the guv besides income tax... You seem to have too many state/fed taxes, with the GST here all states collect it and the feds divvy it up between the states, based on who's paying most, populations etc

Here it's 20% now, some few goods have only 7% (books, art, agricultural products,..)

But we do get a reduced rate of 5% on tampons

Jump hard but i do believe there is a law that was passed a couple of years ago that makes the payout for wrongful imprisonment, non taxable.
I believe the settlement will be paid out from several sources so perhaps the california francise tax board will waterboard those who they can but...death and taxes will always apply.
