I'm Irish, and I've witnessed situations that show how dangerous false accusations can be.

I've seen children ask men for money or cigarettes, and when they're told no, they'll sometimes shout things like, "He's a paedo," or "He's trying to take me." Whether it's a joke or not, those accusations can have very serious consequences.

One incident has always stayed with me. I was on a bus when a mother with four children was distracted on her phone. She didn't notice one of her children run upstairs and head towards the open bus door. A tourist reacted quickly and grabbed the child to stop them from running out.

Instead of thanking him, the mother started shouting that he was trying to kidnap her child. She was livestreaming on social media, and the situation escalated very quickly. I stood up and told everyone what I had actually seen, but she insisted her child had been sitting beside her and claimed the man had grabbed them for no reason.

Gardaí were called, and by the time they arrived, a crowd had gathered outside, ready to attack an innocent man based on an accusation that wasn't true.

Thankfully, the Gardaí interacting with head office who viewed the CCTV from the bus depot. The footage clearly showed that the tourist had saved the child from running out of the bus and had done nothing wrong.

That innocent man could easily have been seriously hurt because people reacted before knowing the facts. It's a reminder that accusations should be investigated properly before anyone jumps to conclusions.
