Toxic fumes from his burning jacket, it's made of man-made plastics...hence him gasping for breath and convulsing in the last few seconds.

The fire will have gobbled up the oxygen very quickly, and faster than any air could enter the lift via the shaft. The intensity of the fire dwindles nearer the end suggesting it also lacked the oxygen to continue combustion. Add the plastic fumes into the mix as @Dr Deacon said.

Plus he looked very unhealthy and the panic and low oxygen could easily have triggered a heart attack/ cardiac arrest.
