one of my horses had an abcess like that
it's called strangles (in a horse, cows i dunno)
proper care would be drain, leave the hole open, flush out with peroxide daily, and administer systemic and local antibiotics

my criticism here would be letting it progress so far before finding it and dealing with it
check your livestock daily, folks...

Seems like it was caused by constant rubbing up against the stall it was put in.
If the enclosure is too small, when they stick their heads out to feed, the neck can get bruised over time.

THey definitely have seen that sooner
