Can the smell tell us anything too?
Probably. From personal experience, I had a golden retriever awhile back who had cancer. Before that he had epilepsy. His final days we let him in the house and he did crap a few times in the house, and the smell was quite different than regular, it's hard to describe but it was a very sickly smelling bowel movement. Honestly never smelled anything like it. So I think it was attributed to the cancer but Im not 100 percent sure. He only lived about 4 years. He seemed a healthy puppy, but quickly acquired epilepsy then cancer not long after.
