It's for accountability. He could say he gave her a copy but never did or she could say he never gave her a copy. When 3rd party does it their name is attached to summons and they can be called into court to testify if there are any issues.

Oh man, when I got free of my ex I went through a period of such intense happiness that I thought I was developing symptoms of bi polar mania. It was sublime.
