Global warming is real. It's easily proven by knowing that planet used to not have polar ice caps. Scientists have known for a long time the icecaps would melt. What they worry about is they believe the growing human population is causing them to melt faster than they would normally. And the melting at such a high rate of speed will make it so animals and people aren't able to adjust and this will cause terrible repercussions for future lives. Whether they are right is impossible to say because its hard to predict its affect on a complex system.
