I'm not a doctor but the actual speaker thingy is deep inside the hole so I reckon you'd still hear stuff.
I use to believe that before a drill instructor made me go deaf pulling my ear, it took months for my hearing to return to normal and years for the crackling sounds to go away every time I yawned. Come to think of it my latest hearing test results I got this month indicate that ear still isn't as sharp as the other one.
