Not that I have any certainty, but speculating that here the victims might have been involved in drugs smuggling either actively or passively - the back story describes the attackers as "four" men on motorcycles, which suggests a gang.

Usually they owe money to money sharks or drug dealers. Sometimes is payback because they killed someone in hte past, in another city... They might be ratting to the police or they are trying to leave the criminal world, which is just not possible.

It could be witness elimination. If they took part in a bank robbery, it is very common for the boss to have the others killed so that they don't rat in case they're caught.
