Actually I have a friend that lives over there and something similar happened years ago in her hometown and when the woman got out of the hospital her husband's family actually invited her over for dinner and are still in her and her kids life. The father was killed for killing his only son. In her hometown it is a crime to kill your son. If he had sliced his wife open and it was a girl she would have been killed for the embarrassment. He was killed for killing his son and not being able to produce a male offspring. The woman had 2 daughters and the third baby was a boy.

In India, the preference of sons still remains strong, with boys adding to the family wealth, while daughters drain it with dowries.

According to Newsweek 'sex selective abortions are widespread in India' where families would prefer to have sons. They said according to a 2007 report by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) son preference in the county is a 'well-documented phenomenon'.

This has implications for skewed sex ratios, female feticide and higher mortality rates for girls.
