I think he was trying to call it out. Herbivores of all kinds, elephants, horses and such will do false charges. They're warnings not to act up. Same with stamping and such. I can see clapping working if it was a young bull elephant filling their oats. They like to feel big for their britches and do less pissed false charges most of them are even kind of playful. And they mellow out when older elephants don't take that shit and slap it out of them.
