So when snakes are swallowing food they have to be quick about it, because their airway is compressed when they are swallowing. Sure, the human body has an epiglottis like the snake, to stop food matter ending up in the lungs, but as we have more body mass, we can swallow with only a momentary pause in breathing; with snakes, that pause is a lot longer. They are literally asphyxiating when they are eating.
