Back in 1979, they told us in army basic training that the average man could not throw a white phosphorus grenade as far as its kill radius. That could cause a problem if you don't have a wall to hide behind.

There are defensive and offensive grenades. White phosphorus grenades have an extremely small radius. They are used for screening and signalling. They can be used for other things but it doesn't change how they work. Not sure what you are confusing there.
