His shout needs to be accompanied by some intimidating body movement(charging at it with the intent to hit it with head lowered as much as you can to the level of the animals head) or it wont work, like we witnessed. Every animal can be scared by strong willed inner rage shown at the right time.

Never tested in on a wild animal to be honest but against dogs (1 or more than a dozen times against a pack of 5-10) and works like a charm every time.
