I read about this. The intake is at normal height, but the wake moving inboard from the tires can actually climb the engine and enter the intake. Had he just gone slower...

It causes hydro-lock. The low air intakes suck water into the cylinders and we all know water is uncompressible which creates an extreme pressure into the tens of thousands, as opposed to the normal 150-200 psi.
