That was either an M-80 or something bigger. When I was a teen I remember being within about 10 feet of one when it went off, covering my ears and everything, the boom and flash was so intense it gave me flash-bang vision for several seconds - that's the sheer power of these things, they are bombs. Putting a metal bucket on one simply turns the bucket into shrapnel. When an M-80 detonates it doesn't merely deform the things its near - it tears them apart entirely. Likely a shard of that bucket went into his body.
It looked like a plastic bucket which I'm not sure is much better..
Thanks for some info about the firecracker, we don't get those here so it's hard to gauge the damage
