Space sweepers. 2021.
Didn't finish. Wouldn't have rated it above 4.
A group of 'space pirates' salvage junk and try to sell it.
They happen upon a little girl robot that has a bomb inside it. The actors are a real mix of different nationalities. Thankfully in the film they have 'translator' ear pieces so they can understand each other and the korean actors don't have to try and speak english and vice versa. The effects are pretty good, but the story is fucken bore. It's extremely slow and even when i gave up at the one hour five minute mark i still didn't know what was happening, and didn't really care.
This a good example of what happens when you take a korean film and bulk it up in a attempt to appeal to a western audience.
Peninsula is another good example. Netflix didn't make it, they simply bought the film because the covid outbreak delayed the release.

Godzilla vs Kong. 2021.
Unratable pile of shit.
CGI fest.
Faced with the 'threat' of Godzilla, Kong is chained and brought to the mainland to face off against the lizard.
I clicked thru this movie in about 20 mins, the run time is 1 hour 53 mins.
The 5th film in this 'series', beginning with Godzilla in 2014. Iv not seen that film, but the trailer sets it up what look to be a pretty decent film and the reviews were right. Then the sequel fell short a bit. Kong skull island, which i tried to watch but gave up on was yet another step downwards. This is proabably not the bottom of the barrel.
Given i have no idea what the plot actually was, it did become clear that a 'bad man' had made a huge metal lizard, for whatever purpose and near the end after Kong gets clobbered from start to finish in messy cgi 'fight scenes' the monkey and the lizard team up against it, for a nonsense showdown.
The end.
If people want to pay money to see it and feel that it was worth it. Good on them. Their also the target audience for The Suicide Squad and the assorted garbage that comes along with that.
Why did i watch it. Just wanted to see the ending. Was i dissapointed. No. How could i be, i knew it was going to shit.

No mercy. 2010.
7/10
Complicated tale of betrayal and murder.
A forensic pathologist has to get a suspect off a murder charge in three days or his kidnapped daughter will die.
Slow burn crime thriller that took an hour to really get going. After that the plot started to explain why he was doing it.
That was related to a earlier case involving the suspects sister and his testimony in her rape and murder case.
Typical of south korean crime films it didn't end there. It was a bit of slog and there the twist at the end was pretty good, but it did not have a 'happy ending'.

Dark water. 2002. Japan.
6/10
A little girl looking for her mother.
Single mother going thru a divorce moves into a run down leaky apartment. Then her and the daughter catch glimpses of another little girl in a yellow rain coat.
Slow and interesting, the film is set in a grimy bland apartment building with the yellow coat and little red bag being the main points of colour. The water effects of the leaking ceiling and walls are quite effective. But it only really cranks up the creep factor in the last 20 mins. Made after Ringu (The ring) and around the same time as Ju-on (The grudge) is the least interesting but still better than all of the remakes that plauged the early 2000's.

The butcher boy. 1997. Ireland.
7/10
Francie Brady goes insane.
Living with a alcoholic father and a mother who has a nervous breakdown and then kills herself, Francis retreats in a a violent fantasy world. The film is quite surreal with lot of added in imagery that represents his imagination as it slowly takes over. It's darky funny but nothing made me laugh out loud. The entire film has a older Francie narrating over it as he remembers what he has done.
Interesting film with the lead child actor giving a full on performance.
