movies Last Movie You Watched..

Malignant!! Starts off a bit slow and seems like it's supernatural horror flick, but takes a twist and does something different. The second half kicks it into gear full speed and has you saying wtf? Is this the same movie, but in a good way!! Music has a retro vibe, which is awesome and the revelation of the killer is awesome.

Angel heart. 1987.
7/10
Crime style thriller with occult overtones set in 1955.
Mickey Rourke stars with Robert De Niro and Lisa Bonet as the detective trying to find the singer Johnny Favourite.
Directed by Alan Parker the film follows 'Harry Angel' as he tries to find the singer. Throughout are elements of religion that seem connected with flashbacks near the end as it seems Angel is going mad. It does feel a bit drawn out near the end but the tension is maintained nicely.

Morphine. 2008. Russia.
8/10
A young doctor in 1917 Russia starts using morphine to cope.
Based on a series of notes written by a young doctor it charts the time spent living in a medical center attending to the locals. He gets involved with one of the nurses and develops a morphine addiction as a result of a vaccine while attending to a dying patient. The film is slow and uneventful, but some of the medical scenes have good practical effects. The setting is rural Russia and mainly set in winter which adds to the increasing bleakness. The nurse also becomes an addict and even thou he tries to get help, things don't work out.
Trailer has no english subtitles.

Ghost rider. 2007.
2/10
A young bloke sells his soul to save his dad, but becomes a servant of the devil.
Nic Cage and Sam Elliot star in this Marvel film as two Ghost riders and give solid performances, for the most part. What sinks the whole the film is everything else. The style is colourful and campy to the maximum point of absurdity, a sign of what the MCU was to perfect later. The plot is ridiculous. Satan has a boy he can't keep in line and needs help. Pure comic book nonsense. The cgi is laughable, that was noted in 2007. A cringe fest that instead of being improved on became the template for a entire cinematic universe of virtual garbage.

Old Henry.
6/10
A father and son take in a wounded stranger and fight the men that want him try to take him by force.
Similar to the film Nobody, but set in 1906. The father wants a quiet life and the son sees a life away from the farm. When the men turn up they aren't who they say they are, but neither is Henry. Good siege film that has a interesting backstory to do with the stranger. After 45mins it slowed as the dad and stranger talked at various points. There was the inevitable gun fight at the end, but no silly traps or wildly bloody kills. Interesting film with a style that has been done but does it well.

Hostage. Missing celebrity. 2021. South Korea.
8/10
A famous actor is kidnapped for ransom.
Very good crime/action drama about a celebrity kidnapped and held for ransom with the sister of a restaurant owner from a previous kidnapping.
Starts with the actor getting taken and slowly reveals that the police are still working on the original kidnapping. At the half way point the two plots get going nicely but aren't yet linked.
That slowly happens with several twists on both sides. Engaging, violent and well thought out with good characters and plot.

Escape from Mogadishu. 2021. South Korea.
8/10
When civil war breaks out in Somalia, North and South Korean embassies have to work together to get out.
True story based on events in 1991. When rebels stage protests then an uprising against the ruling elite, the north Korean embassy staff has to take refuge in the Souths embassy. Forming a uneasy alliance they form a plan to leave.
Straight forward kind of film that has plenty of action and suspense. There is a build up of tension when the protests start and the violence escalates, then the film winds down a bit when they are learning to trust each other and figure out how to leave. The inevitable mad dash chase to the chosen embassy with plenty of gunfire ensures a action style finish with both sides retaining their diplomatic sides on arrival in a friendly country.

Diva. 2020. South Korea.
6/10
Beautifully filmed thriller about two high divers that are involved in a car crash.
The film is told partly in flashbacks and scenes that sometimes seem to play out in the mind of the lead character which tell more of the back story leading up to the accident.
As it progress in real time she becomes more guilt ridden. The scenes are filmed beautifully and there is a real ballet to the way the camera moves and the framing of each shot.
The story itself is becomes slightly more confusing as it goes on and the main character 'remembers' more. It sets up a ghost sort of theme but that is just for effect.

Dune. 2021.
9/10
Epic sci fi.
The emperor removes one house from mining spice and sets up another causing the downfall of the later.
Visually stunning with story line that is compelling and not confusing. Careful not to slow down or lose the viewer with mindless detail, Dune is a film that shows what is possible with great casting, effects, writing and direction.
