Fellini's Casanova. 1976. Italy.
6/10
The life and times of Casanova.
A very theatrical film with loads of costumes, sets and extras. Flamboyant with what seems very little plot. It follows Casanova (Donald Sutherland) as he lives the high society life, at one point being imprisoned. Falling for one particular leads to a downward spiral and a semi return to 'normality'.
With a run time of two and half hours, it keep me interested for most of it, watching the stages it was obviously film on with the painted sets, costumes and lighting was interesting in itself when the film just seemed to be too weird.

Watch Me When I Kill - 1977 - Italy

A giallo that for the most part follows a lot of typical gialli traits. A woman half-witnesses a murder at a pharmacy which results in the killer stalking her, all while offing people on his shit list. Then you find the motive was different than expected. I enjoyed it.

The Hoot Owl - 2022 - United States

I just finished watching this on Tubi. Movies on Tubi tend to be hit or miss, they have some great budget and low budget films, but also it's fair share of crappy movies. As a rule I have to myself, once I start a horror movie, I must finish it even if it's awful.

Of all the potential movies, I went with this one tonight. I thought it looked like it could be a decent low budget film. I'm glad I did. The Hoot Owl starts out great, does some character building then bam, it kicks into hyper-drive. It's kind of a slow burn. The sense of foreboding is on point. The acting was decent. The gore was great, very good actually. This might even be worth a rewatch in the future, I definitely enjoyed it.

Exorcist - The Beginning

I enjoyed the movie as a whole even though the SFX left something to desired although they had a $50 million budget.

My main grievance (albeit a slight one) is the dialogue the possessed Sarah says during the face-off between them and Merrin.
___
Where's your God now, Merrin?

Fucking his only son while you call out his name?

He doesn't care about this whore.

But you do...

Because you want to shove your rotten cock up her juicy ass!

___

Her juicy ass? Why did they go with "her juicy ass!"?

If anything that comical, this is suppose to be an intense scene here and we're going to have Pazuzu the king of demons talk about the juicy ass of the woman he is currently in control of?

First of all, why would her ass be juicy? Does she have diarrhea? Anal seepage?

Is that the only line the censors would allow? Were the other alternatives too vulgar?

Director: "OK, the line is "Because you want to shove your rotten cock up her cunt!""

Censor: Nope! You can't say the C word if you want an 'R' rating.

Director: "OK, rewrite the line is "Because you want to shove your rotten cock up her dripping pussy!"

Censor: Eh..., "dripping" is too graphic.

Director: "Alright, the line is "Because you want to shove your rotten cock up her filthy asshole!"

Censor: Uh... "filthy" is still a little...

Director: "dirty asshole?"

Censor: shakes their head no

Director:
For fucks sake... Juicy? Juicy ass?

Censor: Perfect!

The Batman.
Robert Pattinson was a revelation.

You've obviously given this a lot of thought. I like that.

Hell dogs. 2022. Japan.
5/10
A undercover cop on a vigilante mission.
Slow drama with explosions of violence. Moderate to good crime film.
Lots of characters don't make it hard to follow as there are a few stand outs. The back story is a interesting vigilante plot thread. Overall it starts well only to slow down alot, picks up near the end.

Jung E. 2023. South Korea
5/10
Combat A.I. with the lead developer being her daughter.
From the director of Train to Busan comes another sci-fi action Netflix film. Heavy on CGI that is mainly used for surrounding features, it's a interesting story about the ethics of what happens to a person after they die.
After a interesting start the film sags alot. Its still a story driven film with seamless flashbacks but there just seemed alot of info that took its time.
Overall, a good film with broad appeal due to the generic storyline.

Butterflies. 2018. Turkey.
6/10
Trio of siblings go to bury their father.
Slow but quirky comedy drama about two brothers and sister that haven't seen each other for a few years and are reunited for a trip across the country to bury a father they all never really knew.
Very centered around a quiet Turkish village, it's not a story of a clash of city vs rural but rather the oddities of village life.
Dialouage heavy, its a slice of life from another country.

Iphigenia. 1977. Greece.
9/10
A king has a scarifice his daughter in order get the winds for the ships to sail for war.
Epic greek drama that builds a despairing tension. As more people find out the who the planned sacrifice is, and the king has to explain it to the queen, who was under the assumption that their eldest child was getting married, the film has a series of dramatic conversations. They really get to the heart of what it is to be a ruler and what price one will pay for revenge. Large cast, set in one rural area with a few central characters. Really delves into what it means to be human.

Deranged. 1974.
3/10
The story of Ed Gein.
Right from the start it makes it clear that the film is based on fact and a true story. It has a reporter, who says he covered the original story, narrating some scenes.
I lasted 30mins before i reached for the remote to FF thru it. It's an effective horror film that could be said to be 'inspired' by true events. But the way it sets it all up as fact is pretty bullshit.
With the knowledge of two reasonably good books it was easy to see the massive holes in the plot. All that aside, it does show a man who wasn't too bright and just an oddity in a unknown small community. B-grade horror that tips it hat to real events, but adds alot of 'misinformation'.

Flucht nach Berlin. (Escape to berlin.) 1961. Germany.
7/10
A farmer refuses to join a co-operative in Soviet controlled Germany.
Interesting drama about a farmer in a small town that under pressure to join a national co-operative. He doesn't see any point and his wife and and child leave and he makes his way cross country.
After he leaves, a young bloke in the government is held responsible for his desertion and he in turn ends up trying to get to Berlin.
Filmed in (probably) West Germany in 1961 the film sets a dim picture of Soviet socialism. People not really willing to help, nervous about what could happen if they get caught helping someone. Steady pace as the farmer and reporter woman who goes along at the start before things go wrong.
No real tension or dramatic sequences, just a example of what people would do to escape oppression.

Vadh. India. 2022.
7/10
Good drama about a middle class couple in India who sent their son to America, but in doing so had to take a loan which is crippling them.
Things take a turn when the old guy kills the loan shark. A solid drama that depicts two sides of modern times. A older devoted couple, her very religious and him a retired school teacher. Their son living in America is distant from them and seems not to really care that they still have the debt as he has a new life far away. The loan shark is operating under a higher criminal but also has something on the local inspector.
Slow burn but with a series of plot twists that keep a constant level of suspense. No flashy acting or humor, just a solid film that shows a slice of modern life.

Viking wolf. 2022. Norway.
4/10
A girl gets attacked by a werewolf.
After a initial interesting start the film plods along. None of the characters are very interesting and with the token 'bloke-whose-been-hunting-it-for-years' turning up with one arm missing it was about that point i just started fast forwarding thru it. There are a couple of action scenes with the were wolf, but it looks very cgi and about average.
It doesn't really push it as a horror film should and being that it was made by (sigh) Netflix, it has a generic quality that will sit nicely on their service and be entertaining to family audience.

Dr Petiot. 1990. France.
8/10
A doctor helps people 'escape' occupied France, but in reality he was murdering them and keeping their belongings and cash.
Slow to start with, but eased in to a suspenseful and colourful crime drama. The doctor in real life was a very complicated character.
Suspected of a number of murders before the war, he did make a point, as shown in the film of being helpful to people with few means. But when France was under German control, a prolific lair and thief, he was able to avoid detection and profited immensely. The film shows events of the last couple of years and how he went about deceiving everyone around him with a cheerful charm and endless lies that cover for his insatiable greed.

Low quality scene from the film.
No trailer.

The Netflix all quiet on the western front and against the ice (Greenland expedition) was good. Any gore and psychological mind fuck movies suggestions are greatly appreciated

Ordinary people. 2018. South Korea.
6/10
A new teacher at a school investigates why a student has gone missing.
Starring Don Lee as a gym teacher and student dean, he begins to investigate what happened to a young female student, her friend is looking for her.
Good drama that one would expect from S.K. Not a lot is given away and the story slowly unfolds. Steady and interesting, the flaws start near the end when there starts to be alot of flashbacks that are kind of lengthy. Essential to the story they kinda drag, what is a slow burn film, down.
Didn't finish the film due to that, but a decent example of passable Korean cinema.

Cronos. 1993.
6/10
A antique dealer discovers a gold device that transforms him into a vampire.
First film by Guillermo del Toro. Interesting story that has the dealer trigger the device with out knowing what it does and the wealthy man with the instructions. Slow but balanced story that has Ron Perlman as the assistant to the wealthy trying to get the device. Being a mid '90s film it has very little cgi and a 90 minute run time.
