UPDATE::

A man who was arrested and charged with torturing a child in Pensacola died Wednesday.

Andrew Bennett Ross Celaius, 37, was taken out of general population in Escambia County after the child abuse charges were announced May 1 and was placed in protective custody.

He was taken to the hospital later that evening, according to law enforcement. The Sheriff’s Office would not say why he was being rushed to hospital.

Celauis was arrested April 9 after physicians at a local hospital noticed burn marks on a two-year-old girl that lived in the same property as him, according to Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan.
The mother of the child, who was arrested for neglect, believed the marks were ringworm.
She has since bonded out of jail and claims not to know anything about the abuse, according to the Sheriff.

After executing seven warrants at a property in Pensacola, police found surveillance tapes in the house that law enforcement say shows some of the abuse being perpetrated by the suspect.
In one shocking video the child is seen wearing a dog shock collar. Sheriff Morgan said the collar was activated and the girl screamed in pain.
Another video allegedly showed the suspect throwing bottles of water at the child who was sleeping at the time. Law enforcement then say the suspect is seen firing an air soft gun at the child and burning her with an open flame.
Sheriff Morgan described the incidents as “harassment” and “torture.”

“It’s indescribable, the things nightmares are made of,” he added. “No child should ever be subjected to this.”

He also said that there is a belief the girl may have experienced sexual abuse, although he said those accusations had not been confirmed. He said several electronic storage devices had been recovered and investigators were working out how to access the “cloud,” an online storage space that is often connected to computers and smartphones.
A second man was also arrested for allegedly destroying cell phones belonging to Celauis, according to law enforcement at the press conference. Sheriff deputies recorded the suspect asking Eric Everett Furnans, 36, to destroy cell phones belonging to him.

Escambia County Jail logs show that Furnans was charged with various drug offenses, but has not yet been charged with destroying evidence. He was set a $60,000 and remains in prison.

Celauis was granted a combined bond of just over $2.5 million, but was ineligible to meet the bond because of parole violations, according to jail logs. He was acquitted the 2006 in a case that involved the murder of a two-year-old child.

Both men were expected to appear for a court hearing May 23.

They found him hanging in his cell according to another article. Doesn't say whether or not he had help.

Florida man was arrested after police found evidence that he tortured his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter on multiple occasions by burning her, shooting her with an airsoft gun and throwing bottles at her as she slept while he wore a werewolf mask, police said.

Andrew Ross-Celaius, 37, was arrested and charged with child abuse, aggravated child abuse, probation violation, possession of a weapon and several drug charges.
Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said the abuse was discovered when the girl’s mother, 28-year-old Maranda Lyn Mixson, took her to an emergency room thinking she had ringworm.

The ER physicians, who Morgan said are well-versed in spotting child abuse, quickly determined the marks on her body were actually from burns and immediately called the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the home where they discovered evidence on surveillance cameras and cell phones.
Chief Deputy Chip Simmons said at a press conference on Wednesday they found systematic “torture” on the tapes. Two videos showed the child sleeping as the man entered the room wearing a werewolf mask and throwing the bottle at the child.

“What really strikes you is the fact that it is dark, the child is sleeping, the door opens and this guy throws a half-empty bottle right into the bed to wake the child up,” Simmons said.

They also found a “number of instances” where Ross-Celaius shot the girl with a airsoft gun to wake and hurt her.
Simmons said one of the more disturbing videos shows the child being shocked with a dog collar as she shrieks in pain. Ross-Celaius also allegedly used a butane lighter to burn the girl — either with the flame or by heating the end and pressing it to her skin.

“If you want to think of something you could do a child to terrorize them, this child lived through that,” Morgan said.

Morgan said there’s a suspicion of sexual abuse — which is still unconfirmed. They believe the the abuse happened for at least two months, but may have been going on for longer.
I’ve been in law enforcement for over 30 years and when I looked at the evidence that we saw here, me and members of my staff were speechless,” Simmons said.
While in custody, Ross-Celaius called Eric Furnans, 36, and had him destroy cell phones “which could contain some images recorded of the abuse.” Furnans was arrested and charged for destroying evidence.

Morgan said Mixson was initially arrested for neglect and was released on bond. She is cooperating with investigators and he said they believe she was unaware of the abuse.
The only saving grace that I can say is that at the end of this, the conclusion of this investigation, we are comforted to some degree by the thought that this precious child will not be harmed tonight,” Simmons said.

During the press conference, Morgan said this isn’t the first time Ross-Celaius has allegedly harmed a child. He was charged with the murder of a 2-year-old in 2006, but was acquitted.

On Wednesday night, Ross-Celaius was transported from jail to a local hospital after he was found hanging in his jail cell, according to local news reports. He was expected to appear in court on Thursday for the charges, but it’s not known how long he will remain in the hospital now.

Alas he died.

She, however, got a crowd funder site up to get money to get her kids back:

“You have to be careful with who you leave your kids with because people are very good at putting masks on,” she said.

"She’s serving 24 months of probation and plans to appeal the charges. She says she is doing everything she can to get her three children back. A GoFundMe has been set up to help Mixson get an attorney and get her children back.
