Military service, and your thoughts on why you served your country!

Yes he is as far as we can make out Vwj.

What small and wrinkley ?

You're not very smart. Because I haven't shared a single DM from our convo. But now I will. If it's good for her to do. Then I'm going to invite all her detractors into it. Thanks

I’m afraid my comment was all me anyway I’m out now got shit to do.
Ahhh now he realises you dropped her right in it...... too late. Now they get to see her for who she really is.....

I think the military chooses you at a certain point in your life under the right circumstances.

That's an amazing story, you must be well proud of your families history. Thanks for sharing.

You're too smart to be a rifleman.......no hate to the grunts, much love.

I didn't think I'd like following orders either, but I loved my life there.....

That's some next level James bond shit......

I struggled for years and still do to this day, but you'll push through the other side and be happy and love life. Glad you're doing okay dude.

grunts not so bad, had an uncle fight the japs in WW2, others worked in munitions factories here, great great grandfather was Anzac in WW1 and his brother James got killed in 1918. 3 brothers enlisted.

Had a teacher at school who was a Jap prisoner he was regarded as a weirdo it wasn’t until much later we understand to some extent what he will have gone through. Japs are a cruel race.

Oddly I discussed this with my mam maybe 2 week ago, my great grandfather on her side was in ww1, leg blown off, sent home.
Same happened to her dad in ww2,leg blown off, sent home.
I can remember him knocking on his fake leg vaguely, I'm not sure how old I was when he died but very young.
I asked about my dad's dad serving but she didn't know, my dad was thrown out of the army he said he only lasted a couple of days, didn't like being shouted at so he punched the officer and took a kicking.

I've never even considered myself almost nearly maybe fit enough, thanks to all that serve and served their countries but no thanks.

I am happy there are people willing to serve in the military. This is the reason why we do not have a mandatory military draft.
What bothers me is the high percentage of scum, and very low intelligence of the people that do serve. Most of them barely made it through high school, or come from a very poor background. It is sort of a last ditch choice for them.

The military has advanced high-quality equipment and weapons. However, this is only as good as the people that are operating the technology.
I would like to see admission into the military, held to a higher standard with the pay raised substantially.
This would improve the military, and make us much more powerful as a country.

My question is, If you were given orders to shoot civilians of your own country during a civil unrest situation.. protesting over a Covid type lockdown / protesting against a corrupt politician ect.. would you do it?
I would open fire without hesitation. The chain of command is very important in the military. It is really the difference between life and death.

In order to fire a weapon in the Army, you have to pass weapon handling tests, live range packages. The skills and drills you go through just to be able to hold a rifle with live ammo, is crazy, and you do this every year, and if going into theatre, again you'll have to show competency on all weapons you are trained to use before you even leave your base camp.

So it's not diddies handling weapons, it's people that have more experience of weapons than your average American gun nut. By the time you're trained to use the L85A2, you can strip it blindfolded and assemble it. And do a weapon function test without even blinking an eye.

Also, when dealing with rioters internally, there are ROE's you have to follow, you are not allowed to fire into rioters if they damage property vehicles or even dogs (classed as property). The only time you're allowed to fire on another human, is if they are directly away to harm another human, and even then it would be non-lethal. And only if given a direct order to do so. But you'd never get told, hey "soldier A" shoot that dude throwing a petrol bomb at that jeep......

But you are right, pay does need increased, because a basic squaddie on tour earns a pitiful amount, even with LOA and LSA payments ontop. (if they have family and have done previous tours)

I served for 22 years in the US Army. 4 combat deployments and 4 operational. 60 months of combat. Both my grandfathers served in WW II in the Pacific and Europe. Proud I did.

I joined to finish college and made a career of it.

My uncle was a door gunner on a Huey in Vietnam.

That's badass man, It does give you a sense of pride knowing you give up a lot for the country you love, and the brothers/sisters you meet along the way.

No, Pioneer, our Supp Co have Sigs, Mortars & Pioneers to support your Battalion Company in the Brigade when needed, pretty much a peacetime army in those years & any OS stuff went to the golden ones who politicized better (or kissed arse).

I always thought you were Arty, also we called them snebs in the UK army, little brown nosing bastards.....

Yeah the shit my mates had to go through in Ireland, getting fucking shot at before they could issue a warning that if they continued they would fire back,
