Hunters May Have Found Missing Iowa Cousins

7:59 PM EST, Wed December 5, 2012

(CNN) -- An Iowa family that's been hoping for good news since two young cousins disappeared in July now has to prepare for the worst.

Hunters discovered two bodies in a wooded area Wednesday afternoon, Black Hawk County sheriff's Capt. Rick Abben said.

He said the family of Lyric Cook, 10, and her cousin Elizabeth Collins, 8, has been notified, although the bodies have not yet been positively identified. The bodies were being taken to the state medical examiner's office in Ankeny, Iowa.

"Right now, it's looking like the outcome was not the one that we wanted," Abben said at a news conference in Evansdale, Iowa.

The girls were last seen by their grandmother on July 13 when they left for a bike ride. The girls' bicycles and a purse were found near Meyers Lake hours after they were reported missing.

A search of the 25-acre lake in July turned up nothing, and authorities said they believed the cousins were abducted.

"Cooperation with law enforcement is the key factor in discovering the whereabouts of Lyric and Elizabeth," FBI spokeswoman Sandy Breault said in July. "Unfortunately, in this case, law enforcement has not received total cooperation from all family and close friends," she said.

Abben said the investigation is ongoing, and he thanked the public and the media for their assistance and support in the case.

You can hope for the best but should prepare for the worst. As a parent myself I can only imagine what this family is going through losing not one but two children. I really wish this had a happier ending.:(

Bodies in Woods Believed to Be of Missing Iowa Cousins

12/06/2012 at 07:30 PM EST

In the five months since Elizabeth Collins, 8, and Lyric Cook-Morrissey, 10, vanished on a morning bike ride, residents and their families in the 4-square-mile town of Evansdale, Iowa, worried and prayed over the cousins' fate.

The discovery of two bodies in the woods on Wednesday finally dissolved all hope. They were tentatively identified as those of the missing children.

The girls "are up in heaven with our Savior," Elizabeth's mother Heather Collins writes on Facebook, and "the nightmare of where they are and what is happening to them has been answered. Lord we know that you have them in your loving arms and we are so blessed for that."

Without revealing an approximate time or manner of death, Black Hawk County Sheriff's Capt. Rick Abben says that authorities are "confident, based upon evidence at the scene," that the remains are the girls, although forensic tests still must confirm it.

Bodies Identified As Missing Iowa Cousins

6:47 PM EST, Mon December 10, 2012

(CNN) -- Relatives of 10-year-old Lyric Cook and 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins got news Monday that no family wants.

Authorities identified the bodies found by hunters in a wooded area last week as those of the two young Iowa cousins, missing since July. Their bodies were found in the Seven Bridges Wildlife Area in Bremer County.

Chief Kent Smock of the Evansdale, Iowa, Police Department, confirmed the news and said that the girls' families had been notified, according to a statement from the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office.

The cause of the death in both cases is pending.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those precious little girls," said Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson.

He vowed vigilance in pursuit of those responsible, and said no resource would be spared so that "justice may prevail."
