He watched too many action movies. Anyone who's ever shot steel targets can tell you that hardened steel, like that of a chain or lock, doesn't get so much as a surface level dent from pistol rounds. If anything he should be shooting the brass part where the key is inserted, that may potentially shatter the internal mechanism.

He needs to hold the lock in the palm of his hand to ensure that it doesn't just get knocked away by the bullet. I guarantee one shot will solve his lock problem...or at least help him to forget it.
