They didn't really win if you think about it, America was the only real winner in that war. Britian may not have been conquered by Germany but it emerged from the war a shell of its former self. Heck, just look at pictures of London in 1945, it's comparable to Berlin at the same time period. They lost their super power status, most of their imperial possessions, and essentially devolved from the most powerful amd expansionist nation on Earth into a passive semi-isolationist welfare state.
