Australian star Cate Blanchett took aim at Australia’s treatment of asylum seekers as she urged the European Union to focus on the protection of refugees and not on fortifying borders.
Blanchett, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Goodwill Ambassador since 2016, used her star power to tell Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) that Australia’s immigration detention policy for asylum seekers is a “discredited” approach which creates “psychologically damage”.

“I wonder if those who now question the Convention, or who see walls and barbed-wire fences as a solution to the world’s 36.4 million refugees, have ever met and talked with a refugee?” the 54-year-old Australian actress told the meeting in Brussels.
“Or really forced themselves to confront the human cost of harmful policies such as externalisation.
“As an Australian, I can tell you that we learnt the hard way; the devastating physical and mental torment that refugees experienced while corralled offshore.
“The psychological damage to those guarding them. The billions of dollars of taxpayers money wasted on a now discredited and largely abandoned approach.

“And, may I say, the resultant shame and regret many of us feel surrounding these ineffective and inhumane policies.”
Blanchett said the only way to tackle growing numbers of refugees is to increase funding and humanitarian support.
“The EU can provide the model for enlightened leadership, investing, for example in opportunities and solutions closest to the countries of departure before people have embarked on dangerous journeys – focus on their protection, and not on fortifying borders,” she said.

Blanchett said sher had seen for herself “the devastating impact of insufficient funding” on a visit to South Sudan in July.
Statistics from the UNHCR state that of the 36.4 million who are forced to leave their countries, 69 per cent remain in neighbouring countries.

The star called on the European Parliament to ensure EU policy protects refugees and remind constituents that low and middle-income countries host nearly 90 per cent of all forcibly displaced people and “challenge false claims that will ultimately only seed divisions in our own communities.”
She added the right to seek asylum and the provision of asylum without discrimination were central to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which marks its 75th anniversary this year.

“The European Parliament should continue and build on the EU’s proud tradition of humanitarian support while also ensuring development funding goes to host countries and refugees,” she urged.
“What sits at the core of my dual roles as actor and Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR is the human condition, the human story.”

I’m not sure whether or not her bullshit has merit, but I do think that Australia’s restriction and hyper-focus on every person that tries to enter the country is a bunch of bullshit. I’ve personally been a victim of their goddamn ridiculous racist profiling which made me never want to ever visit again.

I've watched the programme about people coming in through the Airports. How STRICT they are and how rude. Put me off going too. They wouldn't let someone in cos he had gone to prison like 12 years b4 for something NOT that serious. Petty crimes. But a few of them and only went down for few months to jail. Madness!! Also if you don't say you have an apple or food then they Fine you a RIDICULOUS amount of money.
They can keep their country. It looks an amazing place ans I'd LOVE to surf there. But i can't be dealing with their Airports.
What happened with you? If u don't mind me asking?

Cate needs to be fucked up the arse till her nose bleeds.
@ThunderCat 15 years is the cut-off point for anyone who has gone to prison & 10 years if you have been found guilty of an offense but did not get a prison sentence, after these times you will then be seen as a fit & proper person & eligible for privileges like passports, overseas trips, firearms licenses etc, this also applies for people entering the country, same rules apply, helps keep the Riff-Raff in/out, blame the Pommies, they started the bullshit with all the importation of convicts who stole a loaf of bread to feed a starving family. I feel a rant coming on, I'll just go back to my cage.

Those people at the border are doing a sterling job at keeping straight the countless morons who threaten Australia's biosecurity on a daily basis. Every sovereign nation has the right to protect its integrity as such. Disagree? - Don't go

TOTALLY AGREE!!! But the programme i habe seen makes it look SOOOOOO Strict tbh. This woman had a packet of sweets on her handbag and didn't tell them so they fined her $225.00 ... Every Airport HAS to look out for those idiots u mentioned and "YES" they do an Amazing job, but my personal opinion is that SOME just go a wee bit TOO FAR with it.. For instance, i wouldn't be allowed in cos of my past of prison unless they GRILLED me for hours, PHONED the courts and police and got the PROOF i was let out cos they found PROOF i was innocent. In my eyes, they SHOULD NOT not let ex cons in UNLESS they got sent down for something in which effects THEIR country, or others. Even IF i wasn't innocent it was a crime in whixh would not effect them in any way if i waa going on holiday there for few weeks. I was NOT slagging the (your, maybe).country off. As i said its a BEAUTIFUL Country. I just think that SOME just go TOOOOOOO FAR in their.laws, judging people and the food thing is outrageous.. Haha
I get it with fruit and other food bringing maybe contagious diseases ect, i do. But a packet of boiled sweets or a bottle of water is just silly...they didn't evem take this off them, they let them HAVE it and walk out AFTER PAYING THE FINE. That's what pisses me off
