Funny Only In Great Britain (not so great at the moment) :0(

I read alot of the history of Great Britian, alot of their greatness simply came from them colonizing people who had absolutely no way to defend themselves. Like when they conquered India. There was a merchant named Robert Clive, who took advantage of the existing unpopularity of an Indian prince, and essentially conquered a province of India while on a trading voyage - making himself a billionaire landowner overnight.

When the British government learned of what he did they did the same thing but on a grander scale and made all of India their colony, this was not difficult. As Clive had shown, India was ripe for the picking at that time due to civil wars and infighting.

When the British conquered Africa it was even easier. The population of Africa was very low and the people were in the stone age. Blackadder famously quips, "remember the time we were in Africa, and I saved the Field Marshal from a Pygmy armed with a sharpened piece of fruit?"

They did a similar thing conquering Hong Kong from China, which was an insulated empire with little technology apart from 15th century match locks and single sail merchant ships.

My point is Great Birtian built its empire from defeating foes who were pushovers. When it came time for Great Britian to face off against nations on an equal footing they lost almost every time, the fist big loss was agaisnt America. The king went insane after losing the American colonies.

The economy of Great Britian was destroyed after WWI, a war they only won because the USA intervened for them. What was left of the economy of Great Britian was completely wiped out in WWII, which the USA again had to intervene to save them from defeat again. After WWII their coins were completely debased, they couldn't even feed their nation at pre-war levels until the mid 1950's.

They made the NHS and adopted a liberal welfare economy after WWII and their overseas colonies all broke away and the Empire collapsed.

What I find most ironic about the UK is that they technically won both world wars and yet today their economy is smaller than Germany's - a nation that was split in two for 45 years with half enduring institutional Communism - and losing significant territory to Russia (e.g. Kaliningrad) and yet it is still more powerful than the UK.
