UK police have released harrowing video of a truck driver scrolling through his phone before smashing into a car and killing a mother and her three children.

The footage is so disturbing that it’s being used by Surrey Police as a warning to others about the dangers of texting while driving.

The video filmed inside Tomasz Kroker’s truck shows him holding his phone and searching through it for music as he drives along a highway in Berkshire, Gloucestershire Live reports.

Less than a second later the 26-tonne truck slams into a line up banked up vehicles at full speed, killing Tracy Houghton, 45, her two sons Ethan, 13, and Joshua, 11, and her partner's daughter Aimee Goldsmith, 11, instantly.

Kroker was jailed for 10 years for the crime.

Last week in a Tweet, Surrey Police wrote that they made a recent offender watch the “hard-hitting” video.

"Driver of a 26-tonne lorry stopped after the driver was texting with both hands.”

"Six points. £200 fine and some hard hitting video shown to him.”

"The video, as you no doubt will ask, was the in cab video footage of the A34 fatal collision. Shows how tiny distraction leads to fatalities."
