The man, Bradford James Gille, is a known schizophrenic. He was a mental patient in a hospital but was released for some reason and became a homeless vagrant.

He published two books, "The Book of I Jesus Christ" and "If Then To Awaken As the One True King of Kings and Lord of Lords" in which he describes his mental illness in a first person narrative. In short, he believed himself to be Jesus. His stabbing spree was perhapse his attempt at bringing about the Apocolypse probubly.
