Nah, they rang first and made a time. They didn’t just rock up. Pretty sure that they check all licensed holders, every now and again. My town area is all farms and stations.

Pretty sure is all went downhill when Bryant went on a rampage in Tasmania. That was in the late 80s. Laws were made about certain rifles not being allowed. I had to give in my Winchester 12 gauge pump action shotgun.
Now only people with guns are farmers and crims.

That was 1996, we lost many firearms from government buy back. lots of people own firearms then just Farmers and Crims, there are sporting shooters (it's an Olympic sport and many Aussies have won gold medals in shooting), target/clay shooters, hunters, collectors there are semi automatic centerfires like professional vermin control. We have more firearms in Australia now then when the government forced a gun buyback after 1996.

As for the police I own over 2,000 acres and in town we had three visiting officers two were constables and one a sergeant, we have many legally owned firearms but the young constable commented why anyone needs this many firearms to which the sergeant kindly reminded her it was lawful and they were only there to do their job and that she be quiet and do it.

If it was domestic violence your guns will be taken. The divisional firearms officers basically have the right to check your firearms and storage of them whenever they like. Comply or lose your guns.

Interesting. I haven't owned arms there since around the PA era. A brother of a mate is a PO and describes to me inspections may happen at "any reasonable time" which pretty much sounds like what shazza describes...

I quite remember when that happened as it was included in some politician's research they quoted when banning fully automatic weapons here in '86 & additional bans. Me, I'm not a gun nut but some of my family sold weapons so it effected some of their sales & ATF was often up their butt & they were always worried they'd lose their FFL Dealer status. *frowny face*

We were paid some money for the buyback. The government confiscated over 650,000 firearms that were on the list like semi auto's (rifles and handguns and shotguns) their barrels were bent and they were piled, then put into a steel crusher and crushed.
There was one case of a Gold coast (Queensland) dealer who managed to get confiscated firearms and sell them on the blackmarket . here is a snippet.

A QUEENSLAND gun dealer who rorted the national guns buyback scheme and flooded NSW with more than 700 illegal handguns has been sentenced to a record 14 years' jail for firearms-related offences in this state.
Francis Curr, 64, of the Brisbane suburb of Wacol, stood silently as Judge Brian Boulton delivered the sentence in the Downing Centre District Court yesterday.
Curr exploited a loophole in the Queensland Firearms Act at the time of the Federal Government's guns buyback in 1998.

Judge Boulton said it was clear that Curr, a licensed firearms dealer and pawnbroker, knew the weapons he bought with his firearms dealer's licence between 1998 and 2002 - in a conspiracy with two other men - were being sold to NSW criminals.

Yep, knew a guy who had firearms taken after an alleged DV dispute, after 6 months of stress and worry, his case was thrown out by the judge and he told the man " any problems getting your firearms back let me know"

I had heard tale he was not the only one to be caught selling guns that were reported "destroyed" but that has happened in other countries as well.
The thing with buyback programs, even minus the corruption stuff, it does not reduce firearm deaths so... it's stupid imo.
