A father shot dead his two young daughters before apparently turning a gun on himself in Arizona, police said late Wednesday.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department said in a statement that a mother called 911 on Wednesday evening to report "a threatening phone call from her estranged husband" who had their daughters.
Deputies dispatched to his residence and "attempted to talk to a male inside" but shortly after heard a single gunshot, the sheriff's department said.
"Inside, they found the father and two daughters, all with gunshot wounds," according to the statement.
The 7-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene and the 5-year-old was taken to the hospital but later died, the sheriff's department said.
It added that the father was on life support from what was believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He is the only suspect in the case, according to the sheriff's department. It did not name the father or his daughters.

Just before 7 p.m. today, Rincon District deputies responded to the 5700 block of North Kolb Road in reference to a check welfare call. A mother called 911 and said she received a threatening phone call from her estranged husband who had their two daughters with him. Deputies arrived on scene and attempted to talk to a male inside the residence from outside the front door. Soon after, deputies heard one gun shot and they forced entry into the home. Inside, they found the father and two daughters, all with gun shot wounds. Deputies immediately began life-saving measures. The five-year-old girl, was transported to Banner University Medical Center, but succumed to her injuries, and was pronounced deceased. The seven-year-old girl was pronounced deceased at the scene. The father was also transported to the hospital, he is currently on life support. No deputies were injured during the incident. The Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family in light of this terrible tragedy.
