Sykes Top Four In Portimao Tests

Newsflash, 28 January 2011
The official IMS test sessions at Portimao gave Tom Sykes and Joan Lascorz the first chance to measure the progress of the all-new Ninja ZX-10R against its peers, with more than encouraging results.

These tests also hosted the official launch of the 2011 World Superbike Championship, with Kawasaki one of seven competing manufacturers again this year. Tom took the opportunity to speak to the assembled media and IMS management about his expectations for a successful season.

Despite having only one dry day of track action, after sporadic rains led to ever–changing track conditions on days two and three, Sykes was fourth fastest in the final rankings and only 0.267 seconds from the quickest rider.

Like all the riders at Portugal, Tom had hoped for two more dry days to dial the bike into this racetrack and make final preparations before the whole team heads to Australia for the final IMS tests and then the first race of the year, on February 27. His hopes of consistent trck conditions were in vain but the team still managed to get through a good workload and find even more areas to exploit more fully next time out.

Lascorz is not quite back to full fitness after his big crash during the 2010 Supersport World Championship season, but the Superbike rookie was still well in contention with some big names, finishing 10th on the timesheets in a test that featured 16 top quality riders. Joan felt he could have made an even better early impression but was balked by other riders when trying to go for a faster time on day one.

To minimise the risk of a fall, Joan elected not to ride in many of the sessions which proved to be not fully wet, nor really dry, but he did ride in a fully wet condition and was pleased with the positive outcome.

Tom Sykes: “Overall, not too bad in the dry. We were just two tenths off, which I am not saying is fantastic, but at the end of the day we were doing decent times. In the wet we still have some work to do, but it was still positive in the wet. Overall I am pleased with test if not the weather conditions, but we confirmed the general direction we have been going in with set-up, so we can now go to Phillip Island with more parts that will help us in a few areas. We will do the two official test days in Australia and then we go racing.”

Joan Lascorz: “I only wanted to ride in dry conditions so the first day was a good one to test in, and check how the bike and I were going. The bike was good and I was surprised that I was also good. Not 100% yet, but better. I worked well with Pere and we found a good dry set-up on the first day but I got held up by a couple of other riders when trying to improve my lap time. Looking at my ideal times I could have been about 0.6 seconds better. The Kawasaki team staff have been explaining very clearly to me where I can improve and I really appreciate that. In the wet I did not want to risk things too much, but we made some good laps when it was fully wet. I stopped when the track surface became inconsistent as I really is not want to risk a fall.”

Salom And Parkes Both Fast In Official Testing

Newsflash, 28 January 2011
A dry first day of action at Portimao placed Ninja ZX-6R riders David Salom and Broc Parkes second and third in the final rankings after the completion of a three-day Infront Motorsport test.

Changeable weather conditions and unpredictably wet-and-dry track surfaces dominated proceedings on the second and third days, with Parkes fast in all conditions and still able to make real set-up progress, despite the unexpected lack of dry track time.

Salom was again consistently near the top but a crash on the final day, after hitting a wet patch of tarmac and losing the rear, saw David injure the rear of his hip and be forced to sit out the final session. He is fully expected to be fit for the next test and then the first race of the year at the end of February.

Machine developments at this test were concentrated on the evolution of the final race package, with lots of work being done in the area of electronics and suspension. Because of the relatively cool winter conditions, even on the dry first day, the lap and circuit records were not quite reached by any of the 21 riders on show.

Broc Parkes: “Today went really well; we did some good wet tests, and we stayed upright in tricky conditions. We tried something with a new tyre in this test and it didn’t work for us so I don’t think I showed the time that we could have done. The whole test has been a bit difficult with the weather conditions but I got through it and we worked on a lot of good stuff. The bike was definitely one step better again.”

David Salom: “The test was pretty good overall, in the wet it was good and I was second fastest in the dry. I worked well with the team, and we spent most of our time on set-up on suspension and electronics and made progress. The only downside was that I crashed on the wet in turn seven. I opened the gas and opened it a bit too much. I highsided and fell hard, so I have a very small crack in the back of my pelvic bone. No problems, a few days of rest and it will be fine for the test and race in Australia.”

MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo confirms he will race with No 1

Sunday, 30 January 2011
A triumphant 2010 MotoGP racing season witnessed Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider Jorge Lorenzo charge to World Championship victory with an incredible nine race wins and a record breaking 383 championship points earned.

The status of reigning MotoGP World Champion gives the young Mallorcan rider the unique opportunity to change his racing number to No 1 as he defends his title this season. Lorenzo today confirmed his intention to run the coveted No 1 on his Yamaha Factory Racing M1 race bike, revealing a clever design incorporating his JL initials. This will be the first time a Yamaha MotoGP rider has worn the No 1 since Wayne Rainey defended his World Championship title in 1993 for the third consecutive time.
"Today I can reveal my No 1," said Jorge Lorenzo. "I am very proud because you have to work very hard to have the option to wear it. I have been lucky with my design because the No 1 works really well with my JL initials, maybe with different letters it would have been difficult to make it look right, I hope my fans will like it! I won't forget my No 99 this season, it will be there somewhere on my leathers because No 99 is in my heart. It was a difficult choice to change my number but I have earned the right for this unique opportunity to wear it."

Repsol Honda display 2011 team in Malaysia

Monday, 31 January 2011
The three-rider factory team line-up of new boy Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso were presented in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, along with the 2011 RC212V.

The Repsol Honda team officially presented its 2011 MotoGP line-up and bike to the media at the Hotel Pan Pacific in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
Riders Dani Pedrosa, Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso, HRC Vice President Shuhei Nakamoto and the Repsol Honda team which will support the three-rider set-up were all on stage at the event, along with the 2011 RC212V.
After the photo opportunity the three riders took questions from the assembled press, during which Pedrosa expressed some lingering concerns over the condition of his still recovering collarbone he broke last October at Motegi. Dovizioso confirmed he will try the new RC212V chassis for the first time at this week’s Sepang Test which starts tomorrow (Tuesday), and also outlined braking stability as a target for improvement across the three days.
The event was also the first time Stoner appeared in Repsol Honda colours and the Australian is looking forward to continuing work following his first ride of the RC212V at Valencia last November. There, Stoner spoke about his satisfaction with the smoothness of the engine’s power delivery, and like Dovizioso underlined braking stability as an area of concentration across the upcoming three-day schedule.
“I’m really excited and It’s a great emotion to wear the Repsol Honda colours for the first time. When I was a child, I used to watch Mick Doohan winning Championships one after the other with these colours and for me it’s an honour to be part of this team,” said Stoner. “I know that it will be a tough season because there are many strong riders, starting from my two team mates, but I’m very motivated for this new challenge.”
Pedrosa commented: “The winter break has been long, as always, but in my case also good because I had time to rest and do a proper rehabilitation for my shoulder. The test program is to continue developing the good base we had last year. In particular we need to find something extra on the chassis and the engine to improve the stability of the bike entering the corner and the traction at the exit. My target is to fight for the title, of course. In my previous years in MotoGP I had very good races, I've been fighting in front but I still miss the title. This can be due to several reasons, but if I could change something I would say my real wish is to avoid further injury."
Dovizioso was also in good form, adding: “I’m very happy to be part of the Repsol Honda Team, especially this year as we will be a very competitive team, stronger than ever. We are three riders able to fight for the win and the title, me and my team are very enthusiastic. This year we have a high target; to fight for the Championship.”
The trio will continue their efforts to prepare the RC212V for a shot at the final 800cc title with the first official MotoGP Test of 2011, which takes place from February 1st-3rd and can be followed here on motogp.com.
