Herein lie race spoilers, for anyone who hasn't watched it yet.

So, as a few of you know, AVINTWIN and I recently completed a restoration on a 1950 Vincent. For his time and efforts, I decided to take him to Laguna this past weekend for a little father/son trip. A couple months ago, Shovelhead PM's me and says he's going to - can he room with us? Alright, sure, no problem. Says he can hook us up with some passes maybe. Sure, whatever.

Well, holy hell.

We had just regular GA tickets with Paddock Passes. We arrive Thursday afternoon, and hit the track around 6. And it begins.

So after Abraham tossed it into turn 3 on Friday, the boys had a little work to do. AVINTWIN and I sat in the Directors Chairs with a couple of G+T`s and gave some pointers.

We may nor may not have offered them a refreshment when they were all finished. Nobody really knows for sure. Their English was horrible for the most part (Czech team) but they knew how to tell us those shots were FOOKING GOOD!!

Wouldn`t you know he went out and trashed it again on Saturday lol.

MotoGP™ Rules Update: Decision of the Grand Prix Commission

The Grand Prix Commission, composed of Messrs. Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, Chairman), Ignacio Verneda (FIM Executive Director, Sport), Herve Poncharal (IRTA) and Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA) in the presence of Javier Alonso (Dorna) and Mike Trimby (IRTA, Secretary of the meeting), in a meeting held on 13 July 2013 in Sachsenring (GER), made the following decisions:


Technical Regulations MotoGP Class - Effective 2014
Electronics (ECU) Regulations
A detailed specification and permitted options were confirmed.
The use of the official MotoGP ECU, including an internal datalogger, and the official MotoGP software package is compulsory.
Maximum fuel capacity is 24 litres.
Maximum number of engines per rider, per season, is 12.
Factory Status
Each Manufacturer, (including motorcycle manufacturers and chassis manufacturers), can choose to enter up to 4 riders for the season who will participate with “Factory” status.
The use of the official MotoGP ECU is compulsory. However manufacturers are permitted to develop and use their own software.
Maximum fuel capacity is 20 litres.
Maximum number of engines per rider, per season, is five. (Nine Engines for the first year of participation by a new manufacturer).
Engines are subject to the engine homologation regulations which mandate frozen engine design and internal parts. (New Manufacturers are not subject to frozen engine design and internal parts in their first season of participation).

Nakasuga puts Yamaha on pole for Suzuka 8 Hours

Katsuyuki Nakasuga impresses on the way to pole position for the Suzuka 8 Hours, though WSBK and BSB starts Josh Brookes, Jonathan Rea, Leon Haslam and Michael van der Mark are close behind.

Nakasuga puts Yamaha on pole for Suzuka 8 Hours
2012 MotoGP podium finisher Katsuyuki Nakasuga has taken his Monster Energy Yamaha YART team to the top of the timesheets for the Suzuka 8 Hours.

Rain showers at the circuit forced the cancellation of the usual Time Trial single-lap sprint format and replaced with a 40-minute qualifying session for the Top-10 Qualifying teams and run in temperatures of 30 degrees in 60% humidity.

Nakasuga, who finished second in the Valencia Grand Prix last season for Yamaha whilst riding in place of the injured Ben Spies, lapped his local circuit in 2mins 06.817s to put the bike he will share with Josh Waters and Broc Parkes in front.

Next to the Monster Energy Yamaha on the grid will be the Yoshimura Suzuki outfit of Takuya Tsuda and Josh Brookes. Arguably more impressive, however, was Michael van der Mark's run on the Musashi RT Harc-Pro bike, the World Supersport rider qualifying an excellent third ahead of World Superbike star Jonathan Rea on the FCC TSR Honda.

Fifth on the grid will be BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent, courtesy of Erwan Nigon, followed by the Kagayama Suzuki 'legends' entry of former grand prix riders Yukio Kagayama, Noriyuki Haga and 1993 500cc world champion Kevin Schwantz.

Team manager Kagayama said: "I had plans that Kevin and Nori would enter Superpole, but it was cancelled due to rain. However, we finally we got sixth position in the extra qualifying session, which is ok.

"We think that consistent lap-times are more important more than a one-lap special fastest lap Time Trial and we have a great privateer team with Kevin and Nori. We've not entered the race as a gimmick, our goal is to win and we believe that we can!"

Sunday's Suzuka 8-Hour race gets underway at 11:30hrs local time (GMT +9).

Suzuka Eight Hours: The Feel Good Podium Of The Year

1993 world champion Kevin Schwantz and Team Kagayama finished third in the Suzuka 8 Hours World Endurance race. The race was won--in part--by a Rookie Honda rider.

In what can only be described as the feel good podium of the year, racing notables Leon Haslam, Michael van der Mark, Josh Brookes, Yuki Kagayama, Nori Haga and 1993 world champion Kevin Schwantz featured on the 2013 Suzuka 8 Hours podium.
The race was won by the Honda team comprised of Haslam ("broken leg Leon") and Suzuka rookie Michael van der Mark. Second place was a Suzuki team of Josh Brookes, Nobu Aoki and Taka Tsuda.
Third place was taken by the hugely popular Yukio Kagayama, Nori Haga and '93 champ and legend Schwantz.
2012 winner Jon Rea and Ryuichi Kiyonari's squad was taken out with a crash, as was the BMW with American Jason Pridmore on the team.
Schwantz said in a brief phone call this morning, "It was a really good effort by Team Kagayama Suzuki. All the riders did their jobs, the crew was flawless and the Dunlop tires worked great. We made no real big mistakes in the race which was key. We had some really fast teams behind us but we were able to hold them off and take third. Nori and Kagayama each did two stints and I did one. Our pit stops were great--it was testament to a really good endurance racing effort."
"We felt that we had a shot to be on the podium and achieved that. I'm just so happy I can't tell you," Schwantz said.
Schwantz, as a sign of respect for his old rival Wayne Rainey, wore a Rainey edition Shoei helmet in the race.
"In the press conference the press officer personally thanked me for my participation in the event and on that note all the journalists in the room stood up and applauded. He then also noted the increase in ticket sales my attendance generated. I asked, 'What's your question?' and he said he didn't have one but that there was a lot more interest in the race this year and ticket sales were way up and it was no question because of my participation in the race."
Schwantz said the weather forecasting ability of the local Japanese weathermen stunned him. "They said it was going to start raining at 7:00 PM. Just cut and dry--7:00. And we were watching the race on the screen which had the time on it and at 6:59—wouldn't you know it—it began to rain. I looked out the garage door at 7:00 and it really started raining. Unbelievable."
Schwantz was sitting in Team Kagayama Suzuki hospitality when he signed off, but said he thought that the team would make a run to the infamous Log Cabin bar at Suzuka "for old time's sake" later tonight.

Musashi RT Harc-Pro wins at Suzuka ahead of Yoshimura Suzuki and Team Kagayama

Musashi RT Harc-Pro topped the podium of the 2013 Suzuka 8 Hours after a perfectly managed race. The Honda ridden by Takumi Takahashi, Leon Haslam and Michael Van Der Mark finished with a lead of 1’52 over the Yoshimura Suzuki (Takuya Tsuda, Nobuatsu Aoki and Josh Brookes) and the impressive Suzuki of Team Kagayama (Yukio Kagayama, Kevin Schwantz and Noriyuki Haga) that took the chequered flag just one lap behind the winner.

After a long four-way battle at the front of the field the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team (SERT) finished just shy of the podium. Dominique Méliand’s team was visibly disappointed as Vincent Philippe, Anthony Delhalle and Julien Da Costa were just a few seconds slower than the Suzuki of Team Kagayama. However, with this result, the SERT moves to the top of the FIM Endurance World Championship leader board. The Yamaha France GMT 94 Michelin Yamalube also performed well in Japan, coming in fifth. David Checa, Kenny Foray and Matthieu Lagrive finshed just two laps behind the Musashi RT Harc-Pro.

Honda Team Asia (Makoto Tamada, Azlan Kamaruzaman and Yuki Takahashi) finally came out on top in the duel for sixth place with the Honda of Toho Racing with Moriwaki (Tatsuya Yamaguchi, Shinichi Ito and Kazuma Watanabe).

The Monster Energy Yamaha YART finished eighth but made its mark at this 36th edition of the Suzuka 8 Hours when Katsuyuki Nakasuga shot his team into pole position by beating his own 2012 lap record in 2’06.817. The Monster Energy Yamaha YART held its own in the leading pack until a minor leak in the engine seal forced it into the pits for repairs. Given the fast pace of the leaders, it returned to the track mid-race in 11th place.

In tenth behind Honda Kumamoto Racing, Team R2CL (Suzuki) with Gwen Giabbani, Dylan Buisson and Masahiro Shinjo made a remarkable entry into the Top 10 after qualifying in 21st place, finishing a few seconds ahead of the Kawasaki of Bolliger Team Switzerland ridden by Horst Saiger, Roman Stamm and Daniel Sutter.

Among the other permanent teams competing in Japan, the Honda TT Legends showed its mettle in the last part of the race. After tumbling down the field with a gear box problem, John McGuinness, Michael Rutter and Simon Andrews finished 22nd. The British factory team came in ahead of the French Flembbo Leader Team. The Kawasaki ridden by Janek Prosenik, Xavier Demarey and Osamu Nishijima finished 27th. For its maiden Suzuka 8 Hours, Motobox Kremer by Shell Advance with Martin Scherrer, Timo Paavilainen and Florian Bauer finished 31st.

The start of the race was particularly eventful. The first of the top teams to drop out was the FCC TSR Honda. Having taken the lead, Ryuichi Kiyonari crashed almost three hours into the race. BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent also dropped out after two crashes for Erwan Nigon and Jason Pridmore. Erwan Nigon was in the vanguard at the start of the race battling it out in on equal terms with Takuya Tsuda (Yoshimura Suzuki), Katsuyuki Nakasuga (Monster Energy Yamaha YART) and Takumi Takahashi (Musashi RT Harc-Pro).

At the end of the race, a shower added a touch of suspense but had no impact on the race leaders. The next leg of the FIM Endurance World Championship will be the 8 Hours of Oschersleben in Germany on 17 August.

Suzuka, Japan - 28 July 2013: BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent were forced to retire from today's Suzuka 8 Hour, the second round of the 2013 Endurance World Championship, after two crashes in the first half of the race.

With Damian Cudlin forced to withdraw after sustaining a fractured left tibia in a free practice crash, Erwan Nigon and Jason Pridmore put in impressive performances in qualifying to secure fifth place on the grid for today's eight-hour race.
Nigon lost places at the start, but pushed hard in the opening laps to work his way back up through the field and run comfortably in the top five. The Frenchman maintained his pace after the first pit stop, but then crashed after losing the front in a slow turn and was forced back to the pit box for repairs.

The mechanics got the bike repaired and back out on track with little delay, only to receive a stop and go penalty that lost the team even more valuable time. Pridmore then took over and was able to match the lap times of the leading European riders, before he too lost the front in one of Suzuka's slower turns and crashed.

The American, who was drafted in at the last minute as a replacement for the injured Sylvain Barrier, managed to get the bike restarted and back to the pit box, where the bike was inspected and deemed too damaged to continue safely.

It's been a tough week for BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent at Suzuka, with an even tougher ending, but the riders and team are determined to make amends with a strong result in the 8 Hours of Oschersleben, which takes place in just three weeks time.

Erwan Nigon:
"I didn't get the best of starts, but I pushed as hard as I could, got past Haga and then Kiyonari and was able to match the pace of the leaders. I was losing out a little on acceleration out of the turns, but was able to use the top speed advantage we have with the BMW S1000RR to close again on the straights. The bike felt planted in the faster corners, but the feeling from the front wasn't so good in the slower turns, which is where both Jason and me crashed. It's disappointing not to finish the race after such a good qualifying performance, but we knew it was going to be tough once we were down to just two riders. The heat and humidity make riding here at Suzuka extremely demanding and, for me, it's too much for only two riders. On the positive side, we've made some big steps with the bike. This bike is really fast now and we saw the benefit of that in both qualifying and the early part of the race."

Michael Bartholemy:
"Today we've had a disappointing end to a very tough week, but I can't fault the team, as they've done a good job in very difficult circumstances. After qualifying an impressive fifth yesterday, Erwan and Jason were confident going into warm up, only to be hampered by engine problems on both bikes. Not the ideal way to start race day. From the start Erwan was straight into the top five and looked set to remain there until he closed the front and crashed. The additional stop and go penalty lost us even more time, but the team pushed on and Jason did a good job matching the pace of the regular EWC riders, until he also lost the front and went down. The bike was deemed too badly damaged to continue. It's our second retirement in as many races, which makes the next race at Oschersleben a critical one for us. We need to go there and finish on the podium, as we did last season."

Honda TT Legends complete Suzuka 8 Hours

After 198 laps and over 1,000kms of racing, the Honda TT Legends today completed the Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance World Championship race in 22nd place.

The race began at 11.30am local time in 36°C heat, with Suzuka novice Michael Rutter taking part in the running start from 29th on the grid. He brought the bike back safely having battled to 16th place, passing the baton to team-mate and fellow Suzuka newcomer Simon Andrews.

Around halfway through his stint, Andrews made an unscheduled pit stop with clutch issues. The ever-efficient Honda TT Legends crew performed a clutch change within 14 minutes, returning the CBR1000RR Fireblade to the race with John McGuinness on board.

For the next five hours, the team fought its way back up the timesheet with consistent laps from all three riders. Despite a rear puncture just before the halfway stage, the team lay in 25th place by the end of the penultimate stint. With just half an hour to go, it began to rain and McGuinness was forced to pit and switch to wets. He rejoined and completed the race safely, crossing the line in 22nd place.

Despite the efforts of the riders and crew throughout what was a difficult and eventful race for all teams, the Honda TT Legends leave the iconic Japanese circuit without scoring championship points. The next outing for the team will be the Oschersleben 8 Hour in August.

Neil Tuxworth
We’re all disappointed as a team to be honest. This is not the result we wanted to come away with from Suzuka. We had a few issues throughout the race that held us back and to leave without points is frustrating. We’ll go back and analyse what went wrong so we can head to Oschersleben with the clear aim of improving our performance.

John McGuinness
I’m really disappointed for everybody because so much time, so much effort, so much hard work goes into these races. We had a good fuel strategy and we were looking good for seven stops but we had a few issues – the clutch and the flat tyre – that meant we gave minutes away that it was impossible to get back. We went from 50-odd to 22nd so we clawed our way back but I feel like we deserve more as a team. The clutches on these Hondas are bullet-proof so I don’t know what happened. On the plus side, this is my third Suzuka 8 Hour but it’s the first time I’ve done the final stint and that was pretty special. The atmosphere here really is fantastic and the Japanese fans are great.

Michael Rutter
I’ve wanted to do the Suzuka 8 Hour for so long that I can’t believe I’ve done it really. It’s a real shame we had the issues but we pulled back to a half decent result having lost about eight laps after the clutch problem. I’m glad I’ve done it, it’s a real achievement so thanks to the team for making that happen.

Simon Andrews
We had a few issues but the team overcame them well. That’s endurance racing. You need to be able to finish and we did finish, we just had a few mishaps along the way. To come from 53rd to the 22nd is pretty good. It was hard work in the heat in the daytime, particularly the second stint, but the final one in the evening was a lot easier. I’m pretty happy, its been a great trip and a great experience. I love riding this track and it’s a tick off my bucket list.

Haslam and van der Mark victorious at Suzuka

Pata Honda riders Leon Haslam and Michael van der Mark have won the Suzuka 8-hours race in Japan following an incident-packed race earlier today.

Teamed with experienced Japanese rider Takumi Takahashi, the trio’s Musashi HARC-Pro outfit had led the early stages of the gruelling race before they were methodically hunted down by Pata Honda World Superbike team-mate Jonathan Rea.

The 26-year-old won the prestigious event last season and was one of the favourites for this year’s race but was unable to finish after his FCC TSR Honda team-mate, Ryuichi Kiyonari, crashed in the third hour of the race. The damage sustained by the team’s CBR1000RR was too heavy to continue.

The Musashi team inherited the lead, which they extended to one lap over their nearest rivals and held it to the chequered flag, despite rain falling at Suzuka during the final, nerve-wracking 40 minutes.

Haslam, 30, whose father Ron was runner-up in the 1979 running of the 8-hours race, becomes the second British rider to win the Suzuka 8-hours in as many years after Rea’s victory last season.

Twenty-year-old Van der Mark, meanwhile, is the first Dutch rider to win the event, doing so on his first attempt and in his first competitive ride on a Superbike machine and his debut on Bridgestone tyres. Today’s victory, Honda’s 26th, is the fourth consecutive win for the CBR1000RR Fireblade at Suzuka and its fifth in the last six years.

All three Pata Honda riders will be back in action on their own CBRs next weekend (2-4 August) at the Silverstone circuit in the UK – Haslam and Rea in the World Superbike championship and van der Mark on a CBR600RR in World Supersport.

This means so much after the tough season I’ve had. The leg held up pretty well during my stints but I just want to say thanks to the whole Musashi HARC-Pro team. They did a great job and also Mickey and Takahashi-san rode really well. I feel sorry for Jonathan and Kiyo [Ryuichi Kiyonari] but it’s a long tough race and anything can happen. I’m just glad that we managed to hold on to the lead until the end. It’s a really magical feeling.

Michael van der Mark

I’m just so excited! What a fantastic day it’s been – I can’t really believe yet what’s happened! We won the 8-hours!! We had a really strong team and the bike was working so, SO good! And the teamwork during the pitstops was perfect. It was amazing to watch. I am so thankful to everybody that helped me and allowed me to be a part of this incredible experience.

Jonathan Rea

Unfortunately, today we were not able to repeat our win from last year after Kiyo crashed out during his second stint and injured his chest. I enjoyed riding though, especially hunting down the leaders and then giving the bike to Kiyo with a comfortable gap. I did everything I could but this year it was just not meant to be. I must congratulate my two Pata Honda team-mates on winning the race, though – they did a great job.

EWC: Tough days for BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent at Suzuka.

The BMW Motorrad HP RaceSupport backed squad had to retire from the “8 Hours of Suzuka” race after two crashes.

Suzuka/Munich, 28th July 2013. The hard work of BMW Motorrad HP RaceSupport and BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent was not rewarded at this weekend’s “8 Hours of Suzuka” race in Japan. The specialists from Munich and the French-Belgian team had travelled to the second round of the 2013 FIM Endurance World Championship full of confidence, but they experienced difficult days at the Japanese race track. After showing impressive performances in the Suzuka pre-test and in the qualifying, the team was denied to finish the prestigious race.

In Japan, regular riders Erwan Nigon (FRA) and Damian Cudlin (AUS) were joined by American Jason Pridmore, who was drafted in at the last minute as a replacement for the injured Sylvain Barrier (FRA). Their target was to ride the #99 BMW S 1000 RR to a top result at Suzuka, but they suffered a first set-back in the free practice. Cudlin crashed and sustained a fractured left tibia, forcing him to withdraw from the rest of the weekend. His team-mates Nigon and Pridmore then showed strong performances in the qualifying to secure fifth place on the grid for the race.

Nigon lost places at the start, but pushed hard in the opening laps to work his way back up the field and run comfortably in the top five. After the first pit stop, the Frenchman unfortunately crashed when he lost the front in one of the slow corners and was forced back to the pit box. The mechanics got the bike repaired and back out on track with little delay, only to receive a stop and go penalty that lost the team even more valuable time. Pridmore then took over and was able to match the lap times of the leading European riders, before he too lost the front in one of the slower turns and crashed. The American managed to ride back to the pit box, where the bike was inspected and deemed too damaged to continue safely. As a consequence, the team had to retire halfway through the race. The 36th edition of the “Suzuka 8 Hours” was won by the Honda trio Takumi Takahashi (JPN), Leon Haslam (GBR) and Michael van der Mark (NED).

BMW Motorrad HP RaceSupport and BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent will now start with their preparation for the next round of the 2013 Endurance World Championship, the “8 Hours of Oschersleben” (GER), which takes place in just three weeks’ time.

“We’ve had a disappointing end to a very tough week, but I can’t fault the team, as they’ve done a good job in very difficult circumstances”, explained Team Principal Michael Bartholemy. “After qualifying an impressive fifth, Erwan and Jason were confident going into race day. From the start, Erwan was straight into the top five and looked set to remain there until he crashed. The additional stop and go penalty lost us even more time, but the team pushed on and Jason did a good job matching the pace of the regular EWC riders, until he also lost the front and went down. The bike was deemed too badly damaged to continue. This makes the next race at Oschersleben even more important for us. We need to go there and finish on the podium, as we did last season.”

“I didn’t get the best of starts, but I pushed as hard as I could, got past two competitors and was able to match the pace of the leaders”, reported Nigon. “I was losing out a little on acceleration out of the turns, but was able to use the top speed advantage we have with the BMW S 1000 RR to close again on the straights. The bike felt planted in the faster corners, but the feeling from the front wasn’t so good in the slower turns, which is where both Jason and I crashed. It’s disappointing not to finish the race after such a good qualifying performance, but we knew it was going to be tough once we were down to just two riders. The heat and humidity make riding here at Suzuka extremely demanding and, for me, it’s too much for only two riders. On the positive side, we’ve made some big steps with the bike. This bike is really fast now and we saw the benefit of that in both qualifying and the early part of the race.”

“Of course we are disappointed that after our hard work we did not get the rewards on race day”, said Berthold Hauser, General Manager BMW Motorrad HP RaceSupport. “It was a tough weekend, and I have to say that the team and the riders did a good job under difficult circumstances so it is a shame that they were denied to finish the race. But this is endurance racing. We have to put this behind us and focus on the next round, which is our home race at Oschersleben. We have proved at Suzuka that our RR is competitive and fast, so a top result is within reach if we can ensure we have a smooth and trouble-free weekend.”

HONDA TAKES FOURTH WIN IN A ROW AT SUZUKA 8-HOUR

Honda claimed a classic fourth win in a row at a tense and dramatic Coca-Cola Zero Suzuka 8-hour Endurance Road Race – finishing less than a lap ahead of their nearest rivals after building an ultimately unassailable lead before rain struck with barely 30 minutes remaining.

The MuSASHi RT HARC PRO Honda CBR1000RR ridden by Japan’s Takumi Takahashi, Briton Leon Haslam and Dutchman Michael van der Mark, had led the race after one hour, dropped to a close second after the second hour. They took over again as the race wore on, the three riders turning consistent fast lap times. Even so, as the final hour began, they were only seven seconds ahead. Takahashi took over for the final stint and, despite a rain shower with 30 minutes to go eased away from their rivals to win, in yet another close battle in the Japanese industry’s prestigious home race of the year.

It was the 36th running of the headline race at the magnificent Suzuka GP circuit, and Honda’s 26th win, taking the lions’ share of honours in a gruelling event that today combines a round of the FIM World Endurance Championship with Japan’s premier home event. There were 63 teams taking part, 19 riding Honda CBR1000RR machines, plus several international entries from World Endurance regulars.

Although Honda does not field an official entry, the company puts years of production-racing success into specially prepared Honda CBR1000RR Fireblades for the top teams.

A big crowd enjoyed dry weather until rain in the closing stages. The change in conditions was just another complication for riders to face, after more than seven hours of riding in shifts and into the darkness. Unlike a 24-hour endurance race, the Suzuka 8-hour is an extended flat-out sprint, each rider running for about 50 minutes at a time. Heat and humidity combine with intense concentration to make this an exhausting race.

For the MuSASHi RT HARC PRO team and for rider Takahashi, it was a second visit to the 8-hour winner’s circle: he was one of three riders who took the same team’s Honda to victory in 2010. It was the first time for Haslam and van der Mark – the latter had never ridden at the fast and technically complex figure-of-eight circuit before.

Triumph for the three riders contrasted with heartbreak for another top Honda team. The two-rider F.C.C. TSR squad fielded four-times winner Ryuichi Kiyonari and last year’s victor Jonathan Rea. The pair qualified fourth, one place behind the winning team, and had taken a lead of better than 20 seconds by the end of the second hour. Early in the third, Kiyonari crashed out of the lead, and the machine was too badly damaged to continue.

The winning team’s main challenge came from two Suzuki teams. At the finish the Yoshimura squad of Takuya Tsuda, Nobuatsu Aoki (both Japan) and Australian Josh Brooks finished second, 1m 51.996s behind the winners, the only runners still on the same lap. Team Kagayama riders Yukio Kagayama, Noriyuki Haga and former 500cc World Champion Kevin Schwantz were third, one lap down. Schwantz was making a return to racing at the age of 49.

French riders Vincent Philippe, Anthony Delhalle and Julien da Costa were fourth on the SERT Suzuki, top finishers from the regular World Endurance teams taking part and only seven seconds off the rostrum; with the rival Yamaha France team fifth, one lap behind.

Three more Honda teams made it into the top ten.

Next best, in sixth, was a strong performance from Malaysian rider Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman and Japan’s Yuki Takahashi in the Honda Team Asia squad, in spite of being without optimum talents of lead rider, Makoto Tamada. The former GP winner was injured in a crash in practice.

The team gained the position only in the last hour from “Mr 8-hour” Shinichi Itoh, riding with Tatsuya Yamaguchi and Kazuma Watanabe in the TOHO Racing with Moriwaki squad. Veteran former GP star Itoh has four wins and seven pole positions at the Suzuka 8-hour.

Ninth place went to the all-Japanese Honda Kumamoto Racing trio, Mitsuhiro Yoshida, Kazuhiro Kojima and Kazuki Tokudome.

The favoured HONDA TT LEGENDS team of Michael Rutter, Simon Andrews and John McGuinness battled through to 22nd after losing more than half an hour in the second hour with a technical issue. They finished that hour in 49th place, and moved forward steadily to the end.

Honda Hamamatsu ESCARGOT&PGR&H-TEC) pairing Masao Kuboyama and Takahiro Nakatsuhara finished 14th and in the points, nine laps behind the leaders.

Eighteenth-placed Ryokuyoukai Kumamoto Racing Honda riders Makoto Kitaori, Yasuhiro Ohhashi and Kensuke Mori were another six laps down.

Other Honda finishers in the top 30 were Minoru Ohuchida, Tasuku Akimoto and Kuniharu Watase (DOGFISH O-TEC Suzuka) – 24th; Hiroshi Yamashita, Takahashi Ishizuka and Tasuku Oyama (Honda SAYAMA Racing&Hamamatsu&HI-TEC) – 29th;

I saw the ‘PIT IN’ sign twice, but I wanted to continue and felt confident to keep going, so I continued and in the rain we got up to sixth. At the moment I am struggling a bit in the Grand Prix series, so I am happy I could show my strength at Suzuka.”

Crutchlow decision ‘expected’ before Indy

Cal Crutchlow is likely to decide which team he will be riding for in 2014 before the next round of the current season at Indianapolis. That is according to Lin Jarvis, Managing Director of Yamaha Factory Racing who, along with Crutchlow’s Yamaha Tech 3 team and sponsor Monster, is attempting to produce a solution.
What is the latest on the situation regarding Cal Crutchlow’s future?
Really, it is the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team that owns the contract with Cal…but basically there are three really interested parties in Cal’s contract: Tech 3 as the team, Yamaha as the manufacturer and Monster as the sponsor. What is happening in these negotiations is that we - the three parties, collectively - are talking to Cal and his management to see what we can do.
We would love to see Cal stay with us next year, but we realise that his performances are extremely good and that, therefore, he is very hot property and our competitors are also interested in his services. I am hoping he will stay with Tech 3 Yamaha. That will probably all be sorted before the next race - that is what I am expecting.
You recently said that Yamaha has made a large effort in making an attractive offer for Crutchlow. Can you elaborate?
Normally it means money. Basically, we are ready to do something. I think Cal is very happy with the team and with the bike and is very happy with where he is, but he is a professional rider and at a very important stage of his career.
Now is the time to make money in your career, so the main issue is that we are trying - collectively, from three parties - to see if we can put together an offer that is enough for him to stay.
Are you aware that there are plenty of rivals interested in his services?
Yes, we are pretty aware of that. Two strong alternatives - and maybe both companies have more money than us at the moment, shall we say. We have a situation where Cal has evolved in Tech 3 and, normally, Tech 3 is our team where young or developing riders will come on and then maybe step up into the factory team.
Cal is at the prime moment to step up, but we are full. We have Valentino (Rossi) and Jorge (Lorenzo) on two-year contracts so, right now, we have no place at the Yamaha Factory team. It is a difficult circumstance and on the other side especially Ducati have a different situation, so maybe they have more possibilities.

Crutchlow Signs Two Year Ducati Deal

Knowledgeable sources report that Briton Cal Crutchlow has inked a deal that will see him leave the Yamaha fold and ride for the Italian manufacturer Ducati in MotoGP starting in 2014.

Crutchlow's absence at the recent Yamaha factory visit to Yamaha's US headquarters left tongues wagging that no mater the reported reason--that Crutchlow needed rest--that the real reason is that he had decided to leave Yamaha.

This is a true fork in the road for Crutchlow's MotoGP career. The choice was a bike capable of winning with a supposed $300,000 salary, or a big paycheck and an equally big question mark.

Crutchlow chose Ducati and a big payday.

Crutchlow to join Ducati Team in 2014

It has been officially confirmed that Cal Crutchlow has signed with Ducati Team for the 2014 and 2015 MotoGP™ seasons.


In moving to Ducati Team, Crutchlow - currently with Monster Yamaha Tech3 - will re-partner Andrea Dovizioso to whom he was teammate in 2012. Coventry-born and presently residing in the Isle of Man, he sits fifth in the standings behind official factory riders Marc Marquez, Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi. At Ducati Team, Crutchlow will replace 2006 title winner Nicky Hayden.

Crutchlow made his MotoGP™ debut in 2011 and picked up the accolade of Rookie of the Year, having won the World Supersport Championship two years earlier. To date, his premier class career has seen the now 27-year-old achieving six podium finishes and one fastest lap, as well as the pole position he picked up at Assen earlier this season.

  Yamaha has confirmed the expected news that Cal Crutchlow is to leave Monster Yamaha Tech 3 after announcing that current Moto2 racer Pol Espargaro will race for the satellite team next year.
  
  News that Crutchlow has decided to leave Tech 3 to join Ducati's factory MotoGP outfit was leaked on Thursday, with official confirmation arriving on Friday.
  
  Crutchlow joined Tech 3 as a MotoGP rookie in 2011, rebounded from a tough debut campaign to take his first rostrums last year, then continued his upward trajectory to become the top satellite rider so far in 2013.
  
  The Englishman has signed a two-year deal to ride alongside Andrea Dovizioso, his team-mate at Tech 3 last season.
  
  As widely anticipated, Moto2 title contender Espargaro will now replace Crutchlow as he makes his move up to the premier category. Current Tech 3 MotoGP rookie Bradley Smith already has a deal for next season.
  
  22-year-old Espargaro, who finished runner-up to current MotoGP leader Marc Marquez in Moto2 last season, has signed a two-year deal directly with Yamaha - the first season of which will be spent in Tech 3 colours.
  
  With Factory Yamaha riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo both contracted until the end of 2014, Espargaro is then likely to be first in line should a vacancy emerge at the official team for 2015.
  
  “Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd is delighted to be able to announce that it has concluded a two-year agreement with current Spanish Moto2 rider Pol Espargaro,” a Yamaha statement read.
  
  “As a result of this contract the 22-year-old will make his MotoGP debut in 2014 with the Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team and will ride the Yamaha YZR-M1.
  
  “Pol Espargaro is enjoying his third season as a key protagonist in the Moto2 Class and is currently lying second in the Championship standings.”
  
  Pol joins his older brother Aleix in MotoGP, the 24-year-old currently dominating the privateer CRT class on the Aspar ART.
  
  Scott Redding, who currently leads Espargaro in the Moto2 standings, announced during Thursday's BT Sport launch that he will join MotoGP next year, although the bike and team remains unknown.

  Marco Melandri says he isn't worried about the prospect of having to source a new ride in 2014 following BMW's decision to withdraw from World Superbikes, even if he suggests that the mid-season announcement is unlikely to boost motivation.
  
  BMW announced last week that it will be pulling its factory support from the World Superbike Championship at the end of the season, effectively leaving Melandri and team-mate Chaz Davies – both of which remain in the hunt for the 2013 WSBK title – seeking a new ride for next year.
  
  For Melandri, who is currently third in the standings with three wins to his name this year, this is not a new situation, the Italian left in the lurch when Kawasaki withdrew from MotoGP at the end of 2008 and again in 2011 when Yamaha pulled out of WSBK.
  
  With this in mind, Melandri is philosophical about BMW's move, but suggests he will have to call upon his experience to remain focused to the end of the year.
  
  “I'm sorry for the decision BMW has taken but unfortunately I'm used to such situations,” he said. “I'm not really worried because for us riders it is always possible to find a solution, although, of course, at this important stage of the season it is not good for our mood. I hope that the experience will help me to handle it."
  
  Reflecting on this weekend's races at Silverstone, Melandri is hoping for less of the inclement weather that blighted the previous event in Russia – where he was a race winner – and also last year's British round.
  
  "Silverstone is a great and fast track and at the same time it is also very difficult due to its changes of pace and bumpy surface but I still really like it. I hope that the weather - which is always unpredictable in the UK - will be good this time.”

Not even a late spill can stop Tom Sykes from dominating proceedings in Q1 at Silverstone, with Leon Camier and Davide Giugliano rounding out the top three.

  Tom Sykes completed a clean sweep of the Friday timesheets at Silverstone with a dominant performance in Q1, the Briton out-pacing his nearest rival by eight tenths of a second despite a late spill.
  
  Comfortably quickest in FP1, Sykes held back behind early pace setter Davide Giugliano initially before launching to the top of the order with a magnificent 2min 05.355secs lap, at the time almost a second faster than his rivals.
  
  Indeed, that lap would keep him well ahead of the opposition all the way to the chequered flag, Sykes coming out eight tenths clear despite ending his day in the gravel trap at turn one after a low-side from the Kawasaki.
  
  Just as in FP1, Camier was second fastest to complete a successful first day for the Fixi Crescent Suzuki team, while Giugliano held firm in third position on the Althea Aprilia.
  
  A strong day for Pata Honda, Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam completed the top five in fourth and fifth respectively, with Eugene Laverty sixth and Loris Baz in seventh positions.
  
  Marco Melandri ran as high as third in the early stages before slipping back to eighth, while French duo Sylvain Guintoli and Jules Cluzel completed the top ten.
  
  Outside the top ten, Ayrton Badovini headed up Ducati's challenge in 11th place, while Chaz Davies found himself in 12th, despite being only half a second shy of Giugliano in third.
  
  Further back, having been third fastest in FP1, an early crash for Michel Fabrizio would lose him time, though he would recover to 15th, 1.4secs clear of the prospective drop zone ahead of Q2. As it stands, Mark Aitchison, Federico Sandi and Vittorio Iannuzzo are in danger of missing out on Superpole come Saturday.
