Mid-season MotoGP tests take place this week
MotoGP may officially be on its summer break, but Honda, Yamaha and 2015 manufacturer Suzuki will all be in action during private test sessions this week.

Test teams from Honda and Yamaha will be on track at Motegi in Japan on Tuesday and Wednesday, headlined by the return of retired double world champion Casey Stoner to an RCV.

Yamaha will also be testing with factory race riders Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi at Brno in the Czech Republic, when they could try the M1's new seamless shift gearbox for the first time.

Suzuki will continue preparations for its grand prix return with Aspar racer Randy de Puniet and factory development rider Nobuatsu Aoki.

Wet start to Casey Stoner’s MotoGP test return
06 August 2013

"It was good to get back on the bike, if only for a few laps!" - Casey Stoner.

Casey Stoner's MotoGP return was marred by wet weather at Motegi on Tuesday.

The double world champion, who retired from MotoGP following the 2012 Valencia Grand Prix, has signed up for four test sessions with Honda to help develop next year's factory and privateer versions of the RCV.

The plan for Tuesday had been for Stoner to re-familiarise himself with the 2013 machine in the morning and then test the new 2014 prototype in the afternoon, plus a few other test items.

Unfortunately, after just six laps the rain arrived and halted testing for the day

"It was good to get back on the bike, if only for a few laps!" said the 27-year-old Australian. "We only managed to get one run in before the rain arrived which was a little disappointing.

"It was really nice to get that first run, it's been nine months since I've been on a bike and it's going to take me some time to get used to everything again!

"The bike and the track felt good and I hope that we can get some better testing in tomorrow with some dry track time and run some more laps."

Cristian Gabbarini, Stoner's crew chief at both Honda and Ducati, has also travelled to Japan for the test, which continues on Wednesday.

Honda has so far ruled out the possibility of Stoner - who has been competing in the support class of the Australian V8 Supercar championship - making a wild-card race appearance this year.

Stoner's rookie replacement Marc Marquez currently leads the world championship by 16 points from team-mate Dani Pedrosa.

-- Stoner completes full test day as weather improves in Motegi

After a frustrating first day yesterday, where Casey Stoner only managed six full laps due to bad weather, the second day of testing has been very productive. He completed 47 laps and was able to fulfil the test programme scheduled by HRC and execute all of the tasks that had been planned.

This morning, Casey tested a few small items on the 2013 RC213V and continued into the afternoon before switching onto the 2014 machine, the same as Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez tested in Aragon.

Casey Stoner 47 laps
"Thankfully today the weather improved a lot, in fact it was pretty hot, and we were able to get some good track time and work on our test programme. We had a productive day in general and thankfully the test plan wasn't too hectic, so we were able to get most of it done today, after yesterday's washout. It was great to see the team, even if there were only a few people here, and I thank Honda for all their support as ever. It felt really good to get back on the bike after 9 months and I'm happy with how the test went, but it doesn't change my mind about the wild cards - this is not something I am planning to do"

Shuhei Nakamoto HRC Executive Vice President
“Over the course of Casey's two-day test, we’ve been able to gather a vast amount of data and ideas for development. Consequently, we aim to increase our pace of development and hope that this, in turn, will lead to us winning this year's Championship. We focused exclusively on the RC213V, but in future tests, we’ll get Casey to test-ride the tentatively named MotoGP Production Racer and assist in raising its level of performance even further"

Suzuki tries chassis changes in latest MotoGP test
07 August 2013

"We found a good direction with one of the chassis configurations we had available" - Randy de Puniet.

Suzuki continued preparations for its 2015 MotoGP return by joining test teams from Honda and Yamaha at Motegi this week.

Tuesday was hampered by poor weather, but conditions improved for the second and final day.

Suzuki test rider and Aspar MotoGP racer Randy de Puniet suffered two small crashes on Wednesday morning, but was back on track in the afternoon where he evaluated two new chassis configurations.

One of these has now been selected for further development, due to enhanced edge grip and stability.
According to Suzuki, de Puniet's best lap time was a '1m 48.60s, which was slightly slower than his previous test times at Motegi, but in-line with the other riders' lap times in less-than grippy conditions and very hot conditions'.

The other riders present included retired double champion Casey Stoner, taking part in his first 2013 test for Honda. The Motegi race lap record is a 1m 45.589s, set by Stoner's Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa during last year's Japanese Grand Prix.

"In this test we were not so lucky with the weather, as yesterday we stayed in the pit all day," said de Puniet. "Also, the track was slippery and very hot today, so the grip wasn't very good, but we found a good direction with one of the chassis configurations we had available.

"I found one with better tyre contact feeling and better for corner-entry, so we will continue with this in Misano next month. The rain came before the end of the test and I couldn't try to improve my lap time, but overall we are very satisfied."

de Puniet was joined by factory test rider Nobuatsu Aoki, who completed five evaluation laps towards the end of Wednesday's session.

"Today was another good day in our development programme," stated Suzuki MotoGP Test Team manager Davide Brivio. "We had a chance to try different tests with various settings and we tried to better understand the bike's behaviour in different conditions.

"Despite difficult weather conditions, we had a chance to choose one of the two frames available, which we will carry on to develop further in future tests. In the meantime, our engineers have taken some good information away with them for the next stage of development."

Suzuki will be next on track during the official post-race test at Misano from September 16-18th.

At present, Suzuki's new inline four-cylinder machine is still running Mitsubishi electronics. However - like all the factory entries - Suzuki will need to switch to the new Magneti-Marelli control ECU hardware, compulsory from 2014.

Silverstone WSS: Sam Lowes: Sofuoglu did it on purpose…
06 August 2013

Sam Lowes: I didn't expect Kenan to make such a manoeuvre! He did it purposely. It's wrong and shouldn't happen again.

Silverstone WSS: Sam Lowes: Sofuoglu did it on purpose…
Sam Lowes has launched a scathing attack on title rival Kenan Sofuoglu following their collision on the final lap of the World Supersport race at Silverstone, the Briton suggesting his rival made his move with the intention of making contact.

Lowes and Sofuoglu were engaged in a lengthy tussle for victory at Silverstone, the race building up to a last lap confrontation between the title rivals, similar to rounds at Assen and Portimao earlier in the year.

However, after Lowes made his first move at the start of the Arena complex, Sofuoglu would respond with a attempt for the lead into the tight left hander leading onto the Wellington Straight.

Slipping beneath Lowes as he closed the door, the pair made low-speed contact that would cause Lowes to drop the Yamaha. Sofuoglu would go on to win the race, with Lowes picking his bike up in time to secure a potentially crucial second place.

While both Lowes and Sofuoglu adopted a 'friendly' approach during the post-race press conference, the Briton was rather more candid about his opinion in Yakhnich's official press release, claiming Sofuoglu's pass was a deliberate attempt to get through by any means.

“The race was almost won and I prepared the attack to complete the combination,” he said. “But I didn't expect Kenan to make such a manoeuvre! He did it purposely. It's wrong and shouldn't happen again.”

An aggrieved Yakhnich Motorsport duly took their complaints to race stewards, though the protest against Sofuoglu was later dismissed. Indeed, manager Claudio Corsetti was unhappy with the outcome.

“Of course, Sam is happy that he could finish this race with such good result but Kenan's behaviour discouraged. Sam is sure that it was planned as he attacked when Sam couldn't see him. To ride aggressively and what we saw there – two different things.”

Lowes remains 29 points clear of Sofuoglu in the standings with five races remaining.

Fan footage of the incident can be seen below...

Poncharal pays tribute to Ducati-bound Crutchlow
12 August 2013

'Cal is a very special man and a very special rider for me. It doesn't matter where he is going because in our hearts he will always be a Tech 3 rider' - Herve Poncharal

Poncharal pays tribute to Ducati-bound Crutchlow
Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team manager Herve Poncharal has paid tribute to outgoing MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow, following the British star's two-year deal to join the factory Ducati team.

Poncharal hailed the Coventry star as a 'special man and a special rider' and said he was sad Crutchlow was moving to pastures new at the end of this season.

Crutchlow has been with Tech 3 since his rookie 2011 season.

“Cal has been fantastic with the whole team and we have had some great times. Cal is not only a Tech 3 rider but Cal is a Tech 3 member and there is a big difference and we will all miss that and that is going to be a big disappointment,” he said.

“Cal is a very special man and a very special rider for me. It doesn't matter where he is going because in our hearts he will always be a Tech 3 rider.

“What we have experienced together has been something really great, really exciting and unforgettable and I think Tech 3 owes a lot to Cal in terms of what he gave us with results but also media coverage,” added Poncharal.

“And he gave a lot of excitement to the whole team. I think that Cal and Tech 3 was a really good match and he feels part of the Tech 3 family. I am very sad to lose him.”

Crutchlow's Tech 3 Yamaha team-mate, series rookie Bradley Smith, said he believed the 27-year-old is the right man to spark a turnaround in Ducati's fortunes.

“If anybody is going to make the Ducati work it will be Cal and I'm convinced he will do a great job for them. He's been an inspiration to me in my rookie season.

"His move means I will remain with Tech 3 next year, which is brilliant not that I really thought I would be leaving,” said Smith.

“My job in the second half of the season is to close down that finishing gap to the leaders which I'd started to achieve in the last couple of races.”

Crutchlow is currently fifth in the championship standings, just one point factory Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi.

He has finished on the podium four times this season as he edges ever closer to challenging for a maiden MotoGP victory.

IDM Superbike Championship leader Damian Cudlin endured a race he’d soon rather forget at the Red Bull Ring in Austria on the weekend.

Coming straight off the back of a double podium finish at Oschersleben just one week earlier, Cudlin headed into the Red Bull Ring round in a confident mood with a comfortable lead in the championship standings.

The RAC BMW was tipped to be a pace setter from the start at the Red Bull Ring however technical issues, predominantly brake problems, throughout practice and qualifying put Cudlin and his crew on the back foot. Despite the issues, and a crash caused by a front brake seizure in qualifying, Cudlin still managed to qualify 3rd on the grid for Sunday’s two Superbike races.

As the first race got underway in hot and humid conditions, Cudlin made a cautious start before making his customary charge through the field after a couple of laps. Soon though his efforts were thwarted as a handlebar issue, followed by more brake problems halted his charge. He slipped further and further back through the field as the race went on, hoping only for points as the race drew to a close. Eventually coming home in 7th, Cudlin was bitterly disappointed as his championship rivals Nigon and Reiterburger clawed back valuable points in the championship.

“It was very frustrating watching the other guys ride off into the distance as I struggled with technical issues.” Cudlin explained. “The brakes look to be an issue for everyone around here, but we seem to be suffering the worst. It’s clear that we still have the pace to win, but these problems keep holding us back. It’s annoying that’s for sure, but I’m confident me and my crew can find a way around them.”

For the second race, Cudlin’s crew opted for a complete brake system change in the hope of turning their fortunes around. Unfortunately they would only become much worse.

As Cudlin approached the Remus curve at approximately 270kph, he suffered a complete brake failure, sending him and his BMW hurtling towards a tyre wall at horrifying speed. Moments before impact, Cudlin threw his machine on its side ‘speedway style’ and slammed into the barrier. Cudlin was taken to hospital directly following the incident however was later released with no acute fractures or internal injuries.

“I was really lucky to tell you the truth. It certainly could’ve been much worse. The doctor’s tell me nothing’s broken which is a big relief. I feel like I’ve gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson this morning though, only I still have both ears!” Cudlin joked.

When asked about the crash itself, Cudlin only reiterated the words of RAC Team Manager Evert Slager, stating a brake failure as the cause but still unsure as for the reason why. “All I know is that the brake failed completely and I went into the wall because I couldn’t slow down. The guys found the problem with the system, now they just need to analyze why it happened. For now, all I want to focus on is recovery and making sure we come back swinging at Schleiz. We’re still leading the championship, so now we just need to dig deep to keep hold of it until the end!”
