Stoner: "It’ll be interesting to see who goes for victory in Qatar"

Tuesday, 8 March 2011
The Repsol Honda rider is looking forward to starting his first official competition with his 2011 RC212V.

Casey Stoner returned home satisfied with the results obtained in the Sepang Test. After some days of rest, and already thinking about the approaching start of the Grand Prix season, the Australian rider is optimistic about the final pre-season Test in Qatar before the start of the MotoGP World Championship.
Casey, what you did in Malaysia – the last day of the Test – was simply amazing…
“Well, the day before, when we finished the job, we were aware that the next day in the morning we would be able to set a time under two minutes. In Sepang the track is usually at its best in the morning, but I do not usually feel at 100% in the first laps, I prefer to set my fastest time at the end of the day. We decided to use the soft tyres and try to be the first in setting a time under two minutes. To be honest I did not think that only one other rider would set a time like this, as the track was in optimal conditions. We must be happy about the job we did there, it was very good.”
Qatar is a special race for you and you have won it on several occasions. How do you feel about the start of this new season?
“I am very excited, because we spent many days training, but that is not the ideal situation, as during the pre-season we don’t have a wide variety of circuits. Nevertheless, the races are finally approaching and I am looking forward to seeing how we perform with this team, how I work with the bike on the circuit and, above all, what the general level for everyone is. I am sure there will be riders more confident than others, so it will be interesting to see who goes for victory in the first race.”
Your team-mate Dani and you showed great strength during this pre-season. Do you think this year everyone will be faster than ever?
“I think so, I have seen many riders that are taking more risks and they are pushing a lot more. There is more competitiveness because they think victory is possible, they feel they are closer to the podium and that motivates them to take more risks than before. I think we will see very exciting races this year.”
Do you think the Honda is a step ahead of its rivals?
“It is difficult to say. Naturally, we are happy with the path Honda has taken and everything they have done for us from our first Test in Valencia to now, because they have made good progress. Both Dani [Pedrosa] and I are pushing a little more than the others, but until we get to the race it is difficult to know where we really are. At this moment we are happy with what Honda is giving us, we just need to be sure that everything will work at the races.”
Where are you with the clutch, the engine braking and the rebound problems you talked about during the Tests?
“It is difficult to know if the problem comes from the clutch or the electronic control. The bike rebounds a lot when entering the corners and it is difficult to brake late, because the bike is a bit unstable. It is something on which we have worked a lot, especially during the two last sessions. We have improved a bit on that, but it is not enough yet, we have to dedicate more time to it to be at 100%. About the suspension, at the moment we are using last year’s standard. We also have a modified 2011 fork that we tested once, but we had some problems and we did not feel fully comfortable. We decided to wait until we are sure about what we want from the bike before asking about the forks; we need more time to decide what we want.”
Do you think we will see the same four riders on top this year or are there going to be changes?
“I expect some surprises, although I did the same last year and there were the same four riders winning races and getting on the podiums. I am certain Dani [Pedrosa] and Jorge [Lorenzo] will be in front, but Andrea [Dovizioso] is quickly improving and also Simoncelli and Ben Spies can increase the list. Valentino might be ready for the first race, but we might have to wait a little. But I am sure that there might be some unexpected riders that will make an effort to be in front.”

Spies and Lorenzo wrap up Sepang Test

Thursday, 24 February 2011
The Factory Yamaha Racing pair evaluated the second pre-season Test of the year in Malaysia following its conclusion on Thursday.

Ben Spies finished his day at midday on Thursday having used two of the four sets of soft tyres assigned for the final day by his crew on the Factory Yamaha Racing team. The American put in 32 laps in the morning session, managing to record a best time of 2’00.678 despite still feeling the after-effects of his fall the previous day.
"It was a productive test, we got through a lot,” said Spies, who was fifth fastest. “I had one small mistake but on the plus side we had a lot of stuff we accomplished so it's all good. We still have some work to do obviously but we're not too far off race pace. We need to figure out how to get the bike a little bit quicker for a few laps, definitely for qualifying and the beginning of the race.”
He continued: “It wasn't the most ideal conditions today for a quick lap, I did go to put in a few this morning and was pretty pleased with the time. I'm looking forward to a few days rest now in cooler temperatures at home before Qatar! The team have been awesome again, I'm really pleased with how we're working together.”
Lorenzo rode a consistent pace on the final day as he sought to confirm the set-up of his M1, setting a best time of 2’01.003. The Spaniard was satisfied with most areas of his machine but outlined a desire for more power from the Yamaha.
"I feel quite tired, after two and a half days of testing I've finished with a long 20-lap run,” said the World Champion. “The results have been quite good, we had a very consistent pace and I was happy to have improved some things with the bike. I think we've made some big steps forward with traction and feel, although we still need to improve our lap time."
Team Director Massimo Meregalli added: "We've definitely had a good test and have improved the traction of the bike a lot and also the handling. Compared to the last test Ben's improved by a considerable time so he's quite satisfied with the set-up. There is still a gap to the fastest riders but in terms of long runs we are very competitive so we will go to Qatar knowing we can achieve a good result.”
“Jorge found a good set-up this afternoon and achieved a really good long run so we have achieved the targets we set before we came here, I am very satisfied with the team and how we have performed," he concluded.

Rizla Suzuki reveal 2011 GSV-R livery

Thursday, 10 March 2011
The updated 2011 Rizla Suzuki GSV-R which Álvaro Bautista will ride this season has been unveiled by the MotoGP team.

The machine which Álvaro Bautista will be riding in this season’s MotoGP World Championship is the final generation of the 800cc GSV-R four-stroke prototype Grand Prix bike, due to the change in capacity limit to 1000cc next season. The latest – and most technologically advanced – version of Suzuki’s MotoGP challenger features an engine that has improved on its horsepower, driveability and durability through many detailed development changes throughout winter and pre-season testing. It also features improved acceleration characteristics – especially out of slower corners – to assist Bautista in his challenge for MotoGP glory.
To compliment the upgraded engine specifications, Suzuki’s Factory Engineers have also improved the chassis performance by significant developments to the stiffness balance of frame and swing-arm and have optimised the weight balance geometries from last season’s machine. These updates to the chassis have been paired with the most advanced ECU software ever used on a Suzuki Grand Prix machine, to give Bautista more precise traction and wheelie control without losing direct machine control or power, adding to the versatility of the GSV-R in all conditions.
The 2011 Rizla Suzuki GSV-R also features a revised Troy Lee Designs inspired livery, incorporating a new, contemporary and dynamic Rizla logo that will be launched by the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team. The 2011 Rizla Suzuki GSV-R will make its official debut during this weekend’s final pre-season test at Qatar, before making its racing debut – also at Qatar – on Sunday 20th March.
To compliment the latest version of the GSV-R, Rizla Suzuki has also redesigned and refreshed its website for the 2011 season.
