I wonder what the death toll is currently, and what it’s estimated at.
What’s sad is, some of the people who were rescued may die anyways. Imagine being found and being freed, but you still die from your injuries.

Did overthrow the government so yeah, should assume that we would have stood up alot faster. Military are grabbing thier asses at the moment so, boots on the ground to help should have been a given.

It's getting close to over a thousand, with many more expected. A number of apartment buildings just pancaked and fell over - generally, rescue teams have a 48 hr window to find survivors buried in rubble like this, 72 hrs, tops, if they have access to food and water.

Nearly 6.7 million people could be affected by the twin earthquakes in Venezuela, the International Organization for Migration said on Saturday. There are about two million people living in Caracas, it said. The organization said 31.5% of buildings in Catia La Mar, a port city in La Guaira State, were damaged, it added. “While search and rescue operations remain the immediate priority, the humanitarian consequences of this disaster will extend well beyond the coming days,” its assessment said.

There is just one major highway connecting Caracas to La Guaira, the area hardest hit by the quakes. Heavy traffic over the last two days has frustrated rescue efforts, and on Saturday morning officials began restricting access to La Guaira to government vehicles and personnel approved by the authorities. The United States has deployed city and county search and rescue teams from Miami to help in Venezuela, added Lewin, the senior official for the bureau of foreign assistance, humanitarian affairs, and religious freedom at the State Department. Those teams will join others from Virginia, California and Florida already in the country, bringing the total number of specialized, civilian rescuers from the Unties States to nearly 250, he said.
The United States will take on a leading coordinating role in the earthquake response, he added. The role would look similar to the U.S. response to Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica, the official said, when the military ran the country’s major airfield and helped coordinate international groups." Families reported at least 68,900 people missing Saturday, three days after the one-two punch of 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes devastated the South American nation.

“There’s a pile of bodies over there from last night. Newborn babies," said Mileidy Romero, who was among those searching in the seaside town of Caraballeada. "At 8 p.m. (yesterday) there were people alive down there, and they haven’t bothered to rescue them. We’ve located several bodies, and they haven’t helped us recover them either. What are they waiting for?”
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said on state television that more than 14,000 members of the military and police are patrolling the area, where access is now blocked and special permits are required to enter. But many in disaster zones said they had seen little of their government.
Some people climbed the remnants of buildings and cried out names, hoping for any proof of life. Dust coated coastal communities. In punishing heat, more people wore masks as the stench of decomposition spread. In other parts of La Guaira, teams loaded stacks of bodies – some in white bags, other naked – onto white trucks from the ground of a dirt hospital parking lot, where they were being identified.

The International Organization for Migration said over 6 million people could be affected, some 2 million in the capital, Caracas, alone.
Experts said the destruction was amplified by the quick succession of shallow quakes. For days, smaller aftershocks occasionally shook the capital, Caracas and areas hit by the quakes, including one measuring 4.8 on Saturday.
The disaster poses a huge challenge for Rodríguez, the former vice president who took office in January after the U.S. capture and removal of then-President Nicolás Maduro. Venezuela has been facing economic disarray for more than a decade, and many people reject the legitimacy of the political movement Rodríguez represents.
Search teams and foreign aid continued to arrive from Mexico, the U.S., Brazil, El Salvador, France and elsewhere.
