I've heard of intoxicated people being so relaxed that they bend and stretch and avoid breakages that would be the lot of a sober person all tensed up.
I was working in ICU once when we had a chronic drunk in after a car accident. The surgeon pointed out to me that his chronic drinking had atrophied his brain and that this had allowed room for his brain to swell after the accident and actually saved his life.
