What did you do during the Festivus/Christmas/Kwanza/New Years break?

My industry usually shuts down during the holidays (at least us office types do, the humps in the field stay working) and this year with me adding a few vacation days at the start it made for two weeks off so a nice break.

Spent the start & Christmas visiting family (which was mercifully quiet and drama free) and reconnecting with a few friends I haven't seen in years. It was nice and a very good reminder of how grateful I am to have some very awesome people in my life. My GF was waiting for me when I got home and we spent almost a week together which is the longest stretch in probably two years. No fights, lots of sex, lots of good food...it was pleasant but now I'm happy she's gone. I cooked a fair bit, also went out a few times and have ate & drank well these past two weeks. Probably put on ten pounds so need to get back to reality and stop with the gluttony & sloth.

Its been cock numbingly cold tho, like seriously fucking cold...like -35°C/-31°F cold. I like winter and enjoy the cold but that was just too damn much. So didn't get outside at all and didn't make it to the cabin which kind of bummed me out.

All in all it was a nice break, certainly better than last year now to take on 2022.

Due to taking the first two weeks of December off to help the puppy adjust to our house, I have basically worked every day other than my birthday (23rd Dec), Xmas Day and New Years Eve. It’s been nuts as the whole city has managed to give themselves covid, along with the usual winter illnesses.

I’ve just done telephone triage shifts which are fun as most of the admin staff have similar minds to all of us. I’ve done regular shifts at the out of hours GP service since 2009 and the record for most calls waiting to be dealt with has been 112 (we are efficient in general). This past week we broke the record several times with 148 calls waiting Xmas Eve, 238 Boxing Day and 300 on 27th!!! I was having to manage 2-week old babies just over the phone as there was no capacity to send them anywhere, or the parents had covid. The ambulance service were so busy patients with life threatening conditions were waiting hours or being asked if family could drive them to the hospital. If more people knew alcohol hand gel doesn’t kill a lot of vomiting and diarrhoea viruses (like Norovirus) that would help. I’m getting bored of telling people they just need to cuddle a bucket and ‘man up’ 😂.

It’s been a good couple of weeks though. My kids are loving the puppy, and having a puppy is a great excuse not to have to drive all over seeing random relatives 😂.
