So loved that game back in the day - ha sound like a WW2 vet. I modded the heck outta that - was in a modding forum.

I play the older parts as well every now and then. '1946' is still supported with patches and on Steam.
'IL-2 Cliffs of Dover' even got a overhaul and new DLC last summer. No modding... only skins are free to edit for the user.
'Stalingrad' is moddable, to a certain degree at least. Maps, skins, the weather system, the cockpits, game modi, etc.

I recently pirated the 3rd one, realized the release had the other 2 games included and started playing from the beginning. After beating the first I went and bought the whole trilogy, this game deserved it. Just wrapping up #2 on my legit copy I'm looking forward to playing the 3rd.
