I had fondue in winter last year, but with Swiss cheese and different sorts of bread.
When using meat/vegetables I take oil for frying, the variant with broth was new to me.

we also did swiss cheese for starters (which i forgot to take pics of). had cauliflower,bread and apples.
the broth adds a diffrent flavour and tastes good!
