Looks like he tied himself to it for safety in case he fell while cleaning the roof glass but stupidly walked across the glass. Not sure why he made the rope so damn long though.

Rope didn't appear to break. It appears as though he wasnt wearing his harness properly. You can see that he only had the torso latch on and not the two that go around your legs. He would literally still be alive had he worn it properly.

I think the hundred foot fall from the roof far exceeded the harness's maximum tolerance levels stopping the fat bastard before catastrophic failure.
