War and peace. (part 4) Russia.
8/10
Conclusion.
The final part of the film shows the Russian retreat after the previous battle. The French then make their way to Moscow, their the loot and burn the city.
It follows the rich bloke who was the spectator as his is arrested. Scenes of forced marching and executions give it a dark feeling.
The French eventually leave and are soldiers are abandoned, many just dying in the snow or left to helped by the Russians.
Colourful and well filmed it has a nice flow to it all. Long but not too hard to follow. Watching only part three shows the absolute brutality of pre modern warfare. Four depicts what happens when any invading force enters a city under its control.

What ever happened to Aunt Alice. 1969.
7/10
Crime thriller about a woman who murders her house keepers and takes their money.
Good film with an excellent lead performance as Mrs Marrable by Geraldine Page. Ruth Gordon also is solid as the replacement who has come to find out what happened to her friend.
A slow but steady film with a run time of 100 minutes. There isn't much tension but the menace from the actress Page is convincing. A small cast with a very crime story feel as the smaller Alice (Ruth Gordon's character) pieces it all together with the help of a nephew.

Threads. 1984.
7/10
Nuclear attack, the lead up and aftermath.
Doco-drama style film that starts with a series of characters and going about their lives while there is a gradual build up to war between the US and Russia.
The first hour lays out nicely the news reports and only mild interest in the population. When it becomes apparent war will happen the protests and back lash start. This is all overlaid with a voice over and stats displayed that give a timeline. At the one hour point is when the bombs are dropped and the fallout/aftermath begin. Predictably, things get bad then worse. The film has good effects and scenes of destruction and tension are realistic. It shows what is known to happen plus the lack of ability from whatever government officials have survived. It mainly concentrates on the civilian characters showing there struggle for survival or slow death.
Grim and predictable with the underlying message being.
The dead are the lucky ones.

The lost city. 2022
2/10
Romancing the Stone for an idiot generation
Sandra Bullock stars along with Channing Tatum and Daniel Radcliffe in this what was at least for the first 30mins.
A funny film.
It pulls the exact idea and somehow dumbs the whole thing down. It splits the character hero from the 'book' into two.
Tatum as the cover model idiot and Brad Pitt as the idealistic hero, who doesn't last long. From there the moron has to save the day from a very well to do 'bad guy'. It doesn't have the charm or wit of the original and i simply dragged the mouse thru the entire film after i got bored and didn't stop.

The devils trap. 1962. Czechoslovakia.
6/10
A miller who is considered a 'freeman', not really under the authority of the church, is able to understand nature and certain things that are happening.
The local priest on the other hand holds considerable sway in the village in a time when the church is the dominant power. His non compliance angers the priest along with his ability to find water during a drought.
Interesting drama that is a slow burn but not boring. The small cast of characters make it interesting with his son taking a liking to a girl who can't be seen with him. Seems to put forward the notion that organizations that have a monopoly of information will do whatever it takes, it this case they kill off the miller after the priest tells him to turn up to church on Sunday in front of everyone, to hold onto the control of the population if it benefits them.
No trailer.

The Northman. 2022.
5/10
Conan the barbarian updated.
A young prince sees his father killed and pledges revenge.
Interesting film that starts out well with strong echos of Conan, but as it goes on the story drags. Visions a plenty make it a interesting watch but even that falls in to the trap of becoming a bore. Clear indication that more money, big names and studio isn't always a recipe for success. Near the end i just dragged the cursor and clicked thru to the end.
There is a good story, but at just over two hours it feels like Bob Eggers got a chance to expand and the result is more effects.

Thanks for the review. Been looking at this wondering.

Tigers are not afraid. 2017. Mexico.
10/10
A group of kids have a cellfone belonging to a cartel member.
With a runtime of only 75 minutes it's a brisk, tight, creepy and sad film that portrays the violence in mexico and how it affects children.
A 2nd time watch, and it holds up amazingly. It's a ghost story in which the girls mother is quietly calling to her to lead 'Chino' to them.
It has little special effects but the kids are the main focus. As it gets deeper into the story the ghosts become visable to the girl. Wrapped in plastic they look exactly like the victims in real life. The kids maintain a level of innocence through out, even though they are being hunted, which adds a little bit of humour to what is a sad but really great film.

Hatching. 2022. Finland.
7.5/10
Low budget small cast horror that delivers. The girl finds a egg and keeps in her room, only its gets bigger and hatches a part bird/human that slowly turns into her.
The effects are well done. It was in some scenes obvious that is was cgi but the practical ones were used mainly at the start to get you invested. It moves at a quick pace even thou it's a simple story with a run time of just on 80mins. The mother daughter relationship was at the core of it. Mum was a person who crafted a 'ideal' version of the family by endlessly filming/editing and uploading. The daughter feels the pressure to preform in a gymnastics competition but also deal with what becomes a identical that she bonds with.
Kinda predictable with a ending that wasn't a twist, but was nice and creepy.

Servant of the people. 2015. Ukraine.
Did not finish.
A history teacher becomes the President.
T.V. series that became two films. Stars Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The series is 51 episodes of a political comedy.
The first of the two films start with him as a history professor, videoed by one of his students ranting about the current state of government.
It's put on you tube, and bang, he's the president. (????)
I could only assume that, like the MCU, if you really want to follow it, one would have to watch the entire series.
Zelenskyy is a good actor, little mannerisms and his shortness really make him a watchable fellow.
I clicked thru after i got bored and found it was a mashed up few episodes. Im assuming the start of series three.
He really did the 'fish out water' thing quite well and it showed, as in most countries that central government is, to a degree, dictated to by a wealthy few.

Trailer is for servant of the people 2.
Continues the show, he put the rich guys in prison, now they want revenge.
As for what he has actually done locally since getting elected, that is unknown to me. What i do see is an actor saying all the right things.
